Considering WLS in Mexico. Need help choosing location and doctor

I  had lapband surgery in Monterrey in 2002 and had many problems with it, including horrible acid reflux.

In January of this year I had the band removed in Tijuana (by Dr. Fernando Garcia). While the doctor was good, I wasn't thrilled with the accommodations.

Tijuana seems to be more affordable than Monterrey so I'd like to explore other options there.

Can any of you recommend other doctors in Tijuana and let me know about your experience, the cost, etc.?

Thank you.

Alexis

As far as I can tell, in Tijuana, Dr. Garcia's accommodations are near the top if you were at MiDoctor hospital.  His patients now stay at the Marriott before and after, also a top notch hotel for TJ.  Dr. Ortiz does have a private hospital with some other docs called The Obesity Control Center and it is a Center of Excellence, for what that's worth.  Most of the TJ facilities are not going to be fancy.  If you want fancy, I would go to Cancun or Puerto Vallarta, that's where the really fancy medical tourism can be found.  For me, I want my procedure done safely in a sterile environment where I have a window, then I can go home.  It's not worth it to me to spend more but if you are willing, there are some super luxurious places in Cancun and PV for the same surgery.

I am scheduled for surgery with Dr Alejandro Lopez next month...he also uses the Marriott for accommodations.  I have heard great things about the doc, and once I have mine done I will be sure to post updates.

I had my surgery with Dr. Jamie Ponce de Leon in Tj.  He works out of INT hospital which is very clean and a full service hospital. The second floor is for bariatric patients, his prices were very reasonable and my guests and I got to stay at the Hotel Lucerna (very nice).  You can pm me for his patient co-ordinator. Read my blog.  The hospital and Dr.Ponce were on the tv show 16:9 . I had the duodenal switch procedure which cost 8500.00 all inclusive.  no extras added on like hospital service fees or anything.  I think the price is now 8000.00 all inclusive except air fare.  The sleeve is around 4500.  (guessing)  I had better care at that hospital than I would have in Canada.  I was really amazed.  If you look at the Manitoba forum on this web site you will see lots of us from here go to him for our surgeries.  He does lots of sleeve surgeries.  Good luck with your decision there are lots of great doctors in Mexico and they are so much cheaper than Canada and the US.  Barb.

I just had the sleeve done by Dr. Kelly on Nov. 5th in TJ Mexico. I was in the Florence Health Center. It is an older hospital but it is very clean and all the staff provide excellent care. There were 2 of us on our hospital wing and we had 2 nurses and 1 doctor per shift. All the doctors speak English and at least one nurse per shift speaks perfect English. I never had a problem with this.

My surgery went very well. I had a bit of gas and some nausea the first day. On day 3 we were discharged after our leak tests. We then went to The Lucerne Hotel. That afternoon Dr. Kelly's coordinator took us around to flea markets and Revolution St. He took us to dinner the last 2 nites.

I can't say enough about Dr. Kelly and his staff. They are terrific. Besides being an excellent surgeon he is caring, considerate and down to earth. i would go to him again in a heartbeat.

MY cost in Nov was $5700. Some months he has specials. If you need his # or email just ask me.  Good Luck!

I had surgery 06-July-2012 with Dr.Sergio Quinones-Moreno in Tijuana he did my gastric sleeve. He is currently running a end of the year special for 4k for gastric sleeve. Here is his FB https://www.facebook.com/drsergioquinonesbariatrics the majority of his patients are on gastricsleeve.com as I am too. He is awesome and great someone to consider. I have not had any issues as I am self-pay and have no insurance. I had a great experience and highly recommend him.
