Im getting really nervous to have surgery Saturday with Dr. Aceves, mainly because i am terrified of being put to sleep. Never had to do it before. I needed foot surgery 3 years ago tryed to get the surgery and before they put the medicine in the iv i freaked out and left, it happened twice. I just dont want that to happen. I know they give you ativan(SP?) for anxiety and to help you sleep the night before, but what do they give you before surgery? ive taken Xanex before were i dont have one drop of anxiety and i dont care about much, i want to feel like that. and when you get put to sleep do you drift off or does it feel like your falling nto a black hole? lol i need details here! im terrified!!! please help ease my mind, thanks in advance!

It's a peaceful sleep, happens very quickly. Relax and know you are doing the right thing for yourself to become healthy.

They gave me a pill to make me sleepy prior to the procedure so by the time they were rolling me in to surgery I was already pretty loopy. I thought it was some of the best sleep I've gotten in a long time! Haha. Good luck!!! You'll do great.

Hi, my name is Amy. I have mostly been a lurker here on the board. I have read many things you have posted. I am not going to be any help on going under as it has been years since I have had surgery. However, I do want to say that you are not alone in your feelings. I had a horrible panic attack in my office today. I leave for Puerta Vallarta Sat. For surgery on Mon. I'm having surgery with Dr. Joya. I watched a we you tube video with someone being wheeled into surgery and after coming out of anesthesia. She did great, but it hit me. I thought what the heck am I doing!! I awfulized something terrible. Luckily my Mom happened to call me and calmed me down. She made complete sense. I want to share what she told me as I hope it will put you at peace as well.
She said that everything will be fine. And that I should not stress. But if I go in to the operating room and don't come out alive it is only because that is Gods plan. It would be because it is my time. And if it wasn't there it would be from a car wreck, or complications because of my weight. I had to think about that for a second and realized she spwas right. And if I pay $12,000 to die me and the Lord will have a word! . She said if my Dad (deceased) comes to take me for lunch and not her she will be really mad. By this time I was laughing. I don't know your beliefs, but if you believe in God know that he loves you and will be there with you. And you and I will be just fine!!!

I totally agree with everything you said, I am in utah too  I know what you are talking about. How exciting you get to have surgery on Monday, by the end of the year I hope to be heading down to Dr Ponce.

I am still 17 days til surgery with Dr. Ponce and I'm having moments of "what the hell am I doing?" too hahaha but I'm told that's totally normal and I really do have a peace about it in general. I am so grateful that there are options nowadays for us so that we don't have spend our lives extremely unhealthy and die young from heart attack/stroke/ etc...

Also I am not sure what they do in Mexico but I am an Operating Room nurse in southern California and our anesthesiologists give IV Versed shortly before we wheel the patient to the OR. We typically wait to give it until just before we wheel them back so that our patients are awake enough to answer questions for us (we always ask them to confirm what surgery they are expecting to have.. do they have any drug allergies.. etc.) It is amazing to watch people so nervous about having their surgery that they are crying etc.. and then they get the Versed and suddenly they are telling me jokes and asking me what my favorite color is. hahahaha definitely mention to your surgeon and your anesthesiologist that you get very nervous and they might be able to help!
