Question for fellow Canadians, Time off work?
Afternoon all,
This question is geared to fellow Canadians who for whatever reason chose to go the self pay route. Was there any issue getting sick leave from work post surgery? I'm military and while the CF will pay for RNY I prefered DS and was'nt willing to be wait listed for RNY for 1 year+.
Was there any issue for any fellow federal employees getting time off work post op?
Any help would be great , I've weighted this decision for well over a year and i'm ready and willing to make this life altering choice, i'm just not willing to wait for another year to pass.

I don't work for the feds but am a nurse in manitoba .... I had no issue taking time off. I decided to take only 3 weeks ( vsg ) since my job was easy and not super physical . If I was having the surgery here I would have been approved for 4-8 weeks off I think. I only had a couple weeks of sick time banked and didn't want to use ei ( could have though) my job isn't super physical at all. As long as you have a dr's note with your limitations - you are usually good.

Hi Armyguy, I work for DND in Wpg and I had sick time saved up so no issues getting time off, I also checked in with my Dr here civy street and she would sign off on whatever I needed. I went back to work 1/2 days after four weeks. No sure how your mil Dr would work, but check with them prior to your surgery and see if he/she will get on board with you having it done somewhere else. It makes the process alot easier.

Surgery 4 Jun 12 Dr Ponce de Leon in Mexico I was down 57 lbs prior to surgery.
Federal here, no problem getting time off, my civie dr put me off for four weeks, I only requested two.
I don't think you can have wls surgery and still be in the military, effects your deployment status. I could be wrong though but make sure you check into everything.
Goodluck with your travel if you end up going to Mexico, I am sure you will have no problems.

The CF does in fact support WLS if your 35bmi < with co morbs , deployments are not a deal breaker anymore , haa plus I've deployed to Afghan, Dubai and Haiti so i'm in no rush to redeploy again.
I do know the american military you cannot continue to serve post surgery, but then the US military system is very much different.
I will add that getting my inital referall was like pulling teeth thru the military, not due to there objections but there lack of knowledge of the process.

Self pay into another country also is an issue for the military apparently. I have spoken to a military person that wanted a procedure done that is in the USA but not done here yet and apparently they want to have their surgeons doing the procedure, she was afraid she would be removed from her position in the military if she ventured out on her own to get the procedure done in another country. Please do check into this stuff, I don't know much about it, just what I have heard.

oh and it is over a 10 yr wait here in Nova Scotia, I didn't have major co morbs, just feet issues, sleep apnea was mild where my insurance wouldn't cover a machine because you had to have moderate!!! It is crazy but I didn't try the machine out and said the heck with it I will just suffer being tired until I can get the weight off.
I am so glad I did what I did, I am able to get out and run now, walk lots and in general just exercise more. And I should be in bed right now lol so good night.

There are several of us Manitoban's that have gone to Dr Ponce de Leon he charges $5500. His coordinator is Trish and I would totally without hesitation recommend him. Check out the Mexico forum it is under international and you will see alot of references to him. He works out of the INT hospital in TJ. I was so impressed with the care I got and how sincere the Dr and his team were. Both my niece and I went down and had the sleeve done the beginning of June. Also if you check out the Manitoba Forum under International you will be see alot of happy sleevers. We also had one person who had the DS done by him and she is very happy with him as well.

Jackie I'm sorry to hear your military friend had such a hard time, you are correct in saying that those that have had the surgery prior to joining are restricted from joining , those that presently serve and have completed all there trade quals can have the surgery if they meet the BMI/Comorb requirements. As i'm a 16 year member I have no worries about being medically released if I have the surgery in Canada.
You are also correct they do frown on surgerys outside of the country and will not pay for surgerys outside Canada , that includes USA. They do not prevent you from going south if its on your own dime.
They will place you on a temp medical restriction(undeployable) for up to 6 months , then reasess you and you can then be placed on a second 6 month medical cat. after this time they carry out complete physcial and deem you fit for deployment or unfit. This is again where you are correct, if you are not healed and able to carry out the duties of a soldier fit for deployment they will then place you on perement medical cat and within usually 1-2 years they will medically release you.
So there is always the inhereint danger that if theres complecations down the road it may lead to release but after ample amount of time to recover and prove youself fit.
My next step for military funded surgery is meeting with internist in Ottawa.
