Aftercare beyond Mexico
I was refused aftercare by my pcp, but that was because he never had a wls patient before, and didn't feel he could meet my needs. Once speaking with my surgeon he informed me that there really isn't any special aftercare we need. All we require is to have our labs done periodically to ensure our levels are good, which the doc should know what is normal. They even offer for your doc to call them if they have any concerns or issues you may be experiencing, and will work with them in your aftercare.
I am 6 weeks out, and thankfully haven't had any complications. I haven't seen my pcp since he told me to find another doc who can help me, but I plan to try soon, and see how it goes. If he still says goodbye, then I will resort to plan B. Walkin doctors, till I find a new one.

Hi - I'm not sure if you are posting from Canada - or the US, or elsewhere. And by after care - do you mean fills for a band - or just follow up for removal of stitches/staples, regular blood work etc. If you mean fills - I would be sure to have that aspect taken care of BEFORE surgery. As the previous poster said - most family doctors - as I call them here in Canada - don't have a lot of knowledge about WLS. Mine didn't - but she has been more than happy to see me for regular blood work etc. I did have a complication one year post-op requiring surgery - I had my RNY in New Brunswick and live in Newfoundland. I was hospitalized in Newfoundland for 2 nights - improved a bit - then decided to get my *ss on a plane and back to New Brunswick to the hospital where I had my RNY done. At the time - there was no surgeon doing WLS in the Province where I live. Really - if you have a sensible PCP - regular aftercare such as removal of stitches, staples, checking blood work etc, should not be a problem. And if I had WLS out of my home province, or country - I would discuss it with my family doctor first anyway. Emergency aftercare is a different story - I would hope that any PCP or facility that you ended up at if you had a serious problem would look after you - if not - transfer you to a facility that could. The other thing I wanted to mention - and just my opinion of course - if I was going to have WLS done out of my home country - one of the first questions I would have on my list would be if there was some way for my PCP or any health care professional to contact the people who did your surgery - just in case there was issues once you went home. Good luck!

My primary doctor was totally okay with doing my follower up...I went and talked worth her pre surgery. I also checked with a local bariatric group, and inthe event I had complications, they would see me. If you have the sleeve, you can also see regular GI doctors.
I had heard from the beginning that many doctors wouldn't see someone who had surgery done by someone else. I figured I'd deal with it when/if the time came.
Fast forward to about a month ago (just about a month after my surgery) and I was feeling a tightness in my throat, felt like food was getting stuck, not going down, etc. Went to my primary doc. She said she'd put in a request for a referral for me to get in to see a specialist but not to count on it. Turns out I did get the referral approved but in the meantime, she told me to try omneprazol/prilosec (which was given to me after surgery in MX) and it does seem to help for the most part. And I've had two scopes done in the past and would rather not do it again if I'm feeling ok. So, I guess it just all depends on where you are/who your doc is, etc.
Good luck to you.
