Hi Everyone,
Just a quick update-
I have decided to go with a bariatric specialist in Mexico for my surgery. I sent down all my health information today and am waiting for final approval from his team for the surgery. Pretty excited!! I am hoping to schedule the surgery in January when school is out. I have one question.

I am 25-years-old and still ask for my parents help and advice on a lot from work, school, etc. I am a little nervous to bring up the topic to them. They know I am planning on having the surgery and they know of the road blocks that I have encountered since first deciding to have the surgery. Even though they are not helping finacially for any of this process. Their love and support mean a lot to me. Does anyone have any advice on how to bring up the subject of surgery out of the country.

This MD has a TERRIFIC background and is a professor of bariatric surgery throughout Mexico and the USA. So my mind is made up. I am just trying to find a gentle way of bringing it up.

P.S. I have decided to work with Dr. Corvala- Has anyone else worked with him??
thanks

i am 32 and still ask my family advise on the same things. it was not a easy thing to bring up but i  went into the conversation with a determined mind and sprit that my mind was made up and i was going through with it one way or another. i should mention that i have not had surgery yet but i have been approved and my next step is to send a deposit and set a date. we argued about it, cried about it, quit speaking for 3 days argued again, but in the end they have accepted it. give them all the info you can and if your able to, show them the things that made you comfortable with this doctor and the choice to have the surgery. honestly my family and best friend are the only ones ive told i was going to mexico to have this done. i made a joke of it with my coworkers and it didnt go over well so i wont tell them until i come back. In the end you will still be family and it is your body to live with and your health. i know mentally how you are feeling. take care and good luck my dear

Well-
Dr. Corvala denied me for gastric bypass- because my BMI was too high (64) he will only do bypass on pts with a BMI of 55 or lower- I'm fairly confused about that. But my coordinator has put me in contact with Dr. Almanza at the Jerusalem Clinic and they have accepted me for bypass. I just read the update from Melissa about the Jerusalem clinic. But- I am desprite and need this surgery to save my life. I have not heard of any reports of people being in danger and by most accounts they very much like Dr. Almanza and that the staff is very attentive. Any input would be very welcome.

With your situation especially (high BMI)...I would avoid Almanza.  It seems that he is not really loacted in a real hopsital...more of a clinic.  You need more medical support than that as your risk for complications is higher.   I would keep looking.

Hi!
I took your advice lori and started looking again-
I was approved by Dr. Verboonen in the INT hospital- It sounds like a much better option overall, The only bad thing I can find about him is the embezzling issue- but I am paying up front so I don't really care. I am schedule with him for 12/15. Does anyone else have any information good or bad about Dr. Verboonen??

Revision on 01/13/14
How much are you looking to pay? I went with Dr Joya in Puerto Vallarta and it was absolutely fantastic. I paid 10,000 for the vsg, whi*****ludes flight and hotel. I know he has recently lowered his prices, so it could have changed.

Revision from sleeve to RNY is set for January 13, 2014.

Dr. Verboonen is asking for $8,000 plus the hotel- I have to pay for the flight and any extra hotel days I want. So i'm pretty happy- surgery date is 12/15/11!!
