PLEASE HELP!  I just received this from my coordinator and I am really worried about this.

"The only "concern" that I have is that sometimes with a weight such as yours, once Dr. Joya gets in to surgery, he might have to switch from the gastric sleeve to a bypass and the patient needs to trust him to make that decision."

I weighed 341 now at 330 (5'11") and still 3 weeks out from surgery.  I plan to lose another 20lbs on the OPTIFAST diet pre surgery.  My BMI is 46 now and if I drop to 310 my BMI will be 43 at the time of Surgery.  I watched ANDY "JOURNEY TO THIN" and he looks larger than I do but we weigh the same.  He had the Sleeve and he LOOKS AMAZING now!  That is all I want.  I would be  very upset if I was switched to RNY or other while I was under.  IS there any reason why you would NEED TO BE SWITCHED???  Coordinator was WRONG.  Which I was almost sure of when posting but almost only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades according to my late great uncle CY

I am also having the VSG  I am 340lb I thought I was to big for the surgery but I have seen ppl bigger than me that have had the surgery and have lost over 100lbs. Check out http://www.obesityhelp.com/member/luneman/ he was over 340 when he had the VSG with Dr. joya. I think its a money issue, the bypass is 2,000 more than the vsg.

No way, RUN!!!!  I work in surgery and there is no way that what you were told makes any sense.  Get you money back and find someone else.  I know you probably don't want to do this since you had your mind set on having the surgery done soon but you can always choose someone else.  The sleeve is much easier to do than the bypass.  The sleeve is the first part of the DS and was originally done for those who were not going to tolerate the whole procedure due to their physical condition.

OMG, Do not settle for this.  I would be afraid that once I was asleep, he could just do what he wants then charge more money.  You wouldn't be able to sue as it is another country.  The no "law suits" is one of the big reasons that surgery is cheaper there.  The surgeons don't have to pay the horrible malpractice premiums.  If he went ahead and did the procedure after you are asleep, there would be nothing you could do about it.

I'm no Dr or specialist but these are my facts
I'm male -53 years old - 5'-11" and 331 on the day of my surgery. BMI of 44 or 45
I did a three day liquid diet pre surgery
Never was I told that VSG would not be performed.
I was on the table for just over an hour... think they ordered a pizza...?
I'm now on day 10 and am down 27 pounds and thinks are looking good.
Why not contact another coordinator for the same surgeon and see what they say.
I think each surgeon has many coordinators.
Just my 2 cents...
Good luck with what ever you do.

I'd ask why they think this would even be a possibility.  I would think that if they really thought you needed the RNY vs the VSG then they would be prepping you for that right from the start.  It never hurts to get a second or even a third opinion.  Better you feel secure about everything, even if you have to reschedule.  Keep us posted.
