What to Bring With Me?
My RNY is scheduled with Dr. Almanza on April 9th. I am excited, but nervous over everything from the surgery to the flight to what to bring, which leads me to my questions.
I am trying to figure out what to bring with me so I can start packing.
What kind of clothes should I bring
What will I wear at the hospital
Do I need a nightgown for the hospital and slippers?
What is best to wear at the recovery house and the flight home.
Should I opt for 1st class on the flight home, will it really be that much more comfortable
Of course I will bring basic toiletry items what else will I need
I appreciate any and all helpful hints
Hello -
I am going for a lap-band to mexico scheduled for april 5th. I don't really know about your type of surgery or how long you will be there, but I would suggest bringing some comfortable pjs and slippers. As for the flight home, I was told to wear some type of sweat pants or sweat outfit. Just so you don't have to size up and down. Makes sense to me. Also they tell us to bring some Gas-X because they dont sale that in mexico. You might want to ask about that before you leave. Always take a good book and if you have sleep apnea take your machine with you. Also check with the doctor/s if you take pills and vitamins. Also for lap-band we have to switch to chewable vitamins.
Hope that helps

Congrats on your upcoming surgery! check out my blog for a detailed account of my journey with pics.
I wore the hospital gown while at the hospital and while ai had my IV as it was easier. Once I got the IV out I wore shirts and stretchy waist pants the rest of the time.
You will want your slippers and a gown or pj's or whatever you like to sleep in at the recovery house.
Do bring chapstick, and Gas-X strips.I brought a hot pad to help with the gas, which it did.
Whether you fly first class home or not, call ahead and ask for a wheelchair escort. I was really glad I did and you never know how far apart your gates will be if you have to change flights.
Good luck, you are going to love everyone you meet there.

You won't need first class, you aren't really in any pain. You might be a tad uncomfortable, but nothing you can't manage. Most of us never took anything other than basic tylenol at that point. I agree with hollykim, stick with the hospital gown while you are there and hold your butt shut! Bring some slippers, and comfy stretchy clothes for the recovery house. You really don't need much at all. I, for one, did not need the gas strips or the heating pad, but others do, so maybe pack it just in case. Get some great magazines or a paperback to pass the time, although truthfully we had so much fun with our fellow patients, we never had the time to open them up! It was kinda like summer camp for fat girls and it was a blast. Everybody has been where you are, there's no judgement or explaining to do, just talking and helping each other through it. The staff is great, the surgery is easy and recovery after the first 18 hours very manageable. By day 2 and 3, you can hardly believe you've had surgery and that all that anxiety and worry seems so silly now. Pretty soon you are in traffic crossing the bordr into San Diego and heading home. Thinking back on it now, it really went so fast.
Good Luck to you, everything is gonna be fine.
