What is surg. in Mexico all about?
Need advice/resources,
So I might have to end up being self pay for VSG. I brought up to my husband the POSSIBIBLITY of going to Mexico for VSG surg. He has many, many fears on how the health system standards are in Mexico vs. in US. Of course he has lots of questions and I have some of the same questions. Can anyone direct me to where I can learn about the differences of having the VSG proc. in Mexico vs US. His bottom line statement seems to be "there has to be a reason it is cheaper in Mexico". I need to be able to give him actaul info other than what I have been saying ----"US health system is out of control" (what else is new?).
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks
Ann

It is cheaper but pretty much EVERYTHING is cheaper in Mexico. My husband was the same way. I have no way to make it any easier but took my hubby three years to come around. He still doesn't support it but knows its going to happen to make me a happier person. When researching a Mexican doctor, don't go for the cheapest. There are some real cheapos out there that sacrifice too much for the price. Emily
Emily,
Just so you know...Dr. Almanza is the lowest I could find and he is wonderful! I just returned from there and couldn't be happier. I have seen you post negatively about the "lowest price" issue several times and I just have to say you are way off base. I'm not trying to be rude but look at how many, many people have gone to him and been completely 100% happy. I think you should not say things like that unless you have some firsthand reason to say it....it's not fair to Dr. A or his potential clients.

I have decided to go with dr.almanza. His price is really good and there are alot of people on the boards who have gone to him and been happy with the results. hollykim and bikerchik and meohmy have really good blogs on their experiences. just research and go with the dr that feels right to you!!! There are alot of good drs mentioned on this board.
I will post more later but to answer you DH reply "there hs to be a reason it is cheaper in MX" Well the answer is they don't have the inflated insurance prices we have. I could self pay in the US for $20,500 vs $6000.00 in mexico plus $600.00 airfare for 2 and about $100.00 for a room in San diego the night before we went across the bordre.

your right. its so much cheaper in mexico, because they dont have all the lawsuits the states do whi*****rease health care costs. Im typing this from my hospital room in tijuana, mx at angeles hospital. dr. carvala preformed my surgery for the lapband yesterday. It went extremely well! the care i received here was better than any of my stays in the u.s. the hospitals is nicer than mosts u.s. hospitals also very clean and all supplies are same brands used in several of u.s. hospitals. everything used is sterile and comes out of its packaging right in front of you. My husband was the same way but his mom who is a nurse is very supportive of me and is here in mexico with me. she said they have the same protocol, techniques, and standards that we do in the u.s. at this specific hospital. i have met seven other women here who also had bariatric surgery this morning on our way to xray. they also have had wonderful experiences thus far. i cant say enough about this hospital and ALL its staff. i wish u the best of luck on your journey!

Hi Ann,
People ask me this everyday.......The biggest difference is the cost of malpractice insurance that US doctors must purchase and keep up, AND the huge over ride of all things billable. If the staples cost $500, in Mexico, you then pay $500, whereas in the US, your insurance company is paying out $2000 for those same staples. Hospitals, insurance companies, and Physicians simply charge much more in the US. Can you sue in Mexico if something goes awry? No, BUT unlike popular bellief, it if difficult to sue and win in the US also. Regardless the cost of malpractice insurance has led MANY of our own US doctors to quit practicing medicine.
Check your hospital bill sometime after a stay in a US hospital. When you see that you were billed
$11 for 2 Tylenol, you can kinda see how out of control this really is. I just got a bill recently, and noticed I was charged $29 dollars for those ugly little slipper socks you get in the hospital. Now, if you get those in Mexico, you would be charged $2.00. Luckily with Weight Loss Surgery everything is in a package, and so there are no surprises.
Compare it to buying a pair of socks at Wal Mart or else at some fancy store in NYC. Are those socks really worth 10 times more than the ones you bought at Wal Mart? Designer VS Regular?
I actually consulted a family friend who is a Bariatric Surgery locally, and even HE said the Mexican doctors have as much and in many cases better training and MORE experience. Any time you go to a medical facility where they operate in volume, they will be more experienced. My Bariatric Doctor friend does about 5 sleeves a year, and most of the Mexican doctors due 75 a month!
Medical Tourism has been around for quite some time, perhaps youcould just google "medical tourism" and have him do a bit of reading. Many US journalists have done stories about it. I know it has been reviewed on 20/20 and 60 minutes and that night come up when you googel. It is considered safe and many of these hospitals are now being accredited the same way and by the same standards as in the US.
Have you ever gone to your local hospital and clinic and noticed that you cannot pronounce half the names of the doctors? That's because there are MANY foreign doctors that are now our specialists and obviously they were trained elsewhere.
According to the World Health Organization, the US ranks 37th in healthcare. (another thing you can google and look up) It is absurd to think we are the only county with highly trained and qualified medical people. All in all, it is a matter of being outside what we have come to know, and doing a bit of research, and being comfortable with your decision. Hope this helps, GOOD LUCK to you regardless what you decide! PM me if you want to chat.
