I was in Mexico two days ago. I walked across the border from San Ysidro, California to Tijuana MX. I was picked up on the other side. The only bothersome thing was telling the zillions of yellow-shirted Taxi drivers, "No thank you" or "No gracias."
I also was dropped back at the border Monday night about 6pm. I walked back across the border and had a ride waiting on the States side for me. This was a little un-nerving because I had never done this before. But, it was real easy and I would be comfortable doing it again.
On the US side there is a TRAM station right there. One can actually take the tram all the way back to San Diego!
I was completely unaware of any problems going on in other parts of Mexico. The only thing I was really glad was that I had a light-weight jacket with me. I wore that re-entering the US. I just wanted to appear 'conservative' for I felt my blouse was a little low-cut.
When I had my surgery with Dr. Almanza everything was "door to door" and my mom and I never ever were left unattended nor did we ever feel not safe.
I recommend reading hollykim's blog on here. Holy cow did she do an amazing job at blogging about every detail surrounding her recent journey to Dr. Almanza's ! Her pictures are amazing as well!
Good luck with your journey. My first experience in Mexico reminded me of traveling to the USVI. One can be kinda smacked in the face with the impoverished look of all the buildings and stuff. But, it is just cosmetic stuff.
Oh, BTW, the weather was absolutely perfect this past Monday! More humidity than I'm normally used to so I was glad I had a hair clip! LOL

I can understand your concern, however if you can keep perspective on this it will be ok. Yes, there are drug war/cartel issues, but it's not everywhere. Kinda like saying you wouldn't visit NYC because of a gang problem. It's a BIG city, and the issues are confined to government workers, police, drug gangs and informants. You are picked up in a medical Hospital van and driven directly to the lab and then the hospital. There has never been any issues with these types of transfers, but that's not to say it could NEVER happen either. Same as with the other issues, kidnappings etc have to do with business men, etc not people going to the hospital.
In general, it would be the same as going to NYC or LA. If you stay out of the targeted problem areas, the other areas are safe and pleasant to travel in.
Good luck to you. It will be over before you know it and you'll be back home in CT!
You will get awesome care, but do call the co-ordinator with your concerns, she should be able to put your mind at ease.

Hi there! I am writing this from the recovery house in TJ at this moment. I had my surgery on Monday and like many have said I have never felt unsafe...not even for a second. You are always with their staff and a group of people and the house is in a gated community. We have been completely pampered and spoiled here. They took us shopping yesterday and it was really fun and great to be outside...the day was perfect...sunny but not too warm. Seriously, I haven't seen one thing that has even made me nervous so just relax...you will be fine. I can't wait to get a few more weeks out so I can tell you how much I love my sleeve! lol

Im currently in tijuana and had no problems crossing the border. This has been a wonderful experience at Angeles Hospital thus far. Obviously I cant say anything about crossing the border going back to the states yet, but Im sure it will be fine also. You are in my prayers and Im sure you will be fine. Good Luck!
