Nervous about traveling across the border..

Before I made my decision to go to MX I was afraid of having a procedure out of the States..However, I am now over that fear thanks to all of the support and success posted here..

My biggest concern right now is traveling across the border into Tiajuana,MX. There are warnings for U.S. citizens not to cross the border right now do to the drug war that going on..Has anyone been to MX in the pass wk, if so what was your experience..I leave nxt wk and I'm very nervous about the travel...Thanks

I am 29 yrs. old and I will be turning 30 on 3-30-10...For the past 10 yrs. I have set goals to loss weight for my b-day and every year, I fall into the same yo-yo spiral...Up and Down...Lose 20 gain 25-30...I am sooo tired!!!
I was denied Lap-Band surgery by my insurance after going through all the pre-op exams, pych evals and diets so I went into a major depression and lost hope....I started looking on-line and found that I can go to MX and have my dream surgery at a fair and reasonable cost....I was all in!!! This is my final chance to change my life permanetly...
I am 5'7 at 230lbs and my Husband does not want me to get this surgery especially not in MX..He thinks Im crazy and He does NOT support me....Help!!! I need support from those of you that have been to TJ Mexico and have had your surgery done with Dr. Almanza-Reyes...Pleeeease Help Me....

I was there 2 months ago so I can't speak for the recent problems in Cuidad (near the Texas/NM border) that have been in the news.  I can say, however, that Dr. Almanza's group makes certain that you feel safe and protected and there is someone with you at all times when being trasported between the clinic and house.

Hopefully someone who has gone in the past week will chime in.  You can also ask your coordinator to detail the safety precautions that the drivers take when transporting you.

Best of luck with your surgery--is your husband going with you?  Mine did and it made a world of difference in his support.  He had never struggled with weight and no one in his family is overweight, but going with me through this process and meeting other folks on the same journey was eye-opening.  He was also VERY well taken care of there!

Thanks for the response. Seems like we have very similar stories. Unfortunately, my Husband will not be going with me, which is another reason I am so nervous because we do everything together. But I've decided that I have to do this for myself even if its by myself. Others have done it so I believe I will be okay. I've met someone on OH, from my State that will be there when I'm there. Anyway Please say a prayer for me and I'll keep you posted..

By the way, I'm 29 and 5'7" also.  I ballooned to 251 between scheduling my surgery and starting my pre-op diet.  On my day of surgery I was 243 and today I am 215; 2 months later.

I am very similiar to you. I'm 29 and hubby is not too excited about surgery in Mexico. Maybe you should wait until you are a little more sure of your choice.

Thanks for your response. I've been back and forth with this decision for weeks and weeks and I didn't find rest until I made up my mind to JUST DO IT!!! I already paid my air-fare, booked my room and put a deposit down already..So I'm on my way...

Oh wow, we are very much alike in i am also 5'7, 230 and I will be 30 in july.  I know what you mean completely about the weight loss.  I am planning on having my surgery in June and my hubbys going.  Hes nervous about it but supportive.  I have family in san diego and basically you just get picked up go straight to the facility and then stay there until you go home.  I was reading about the crimes in mexico today and its more in juarez right now, not to say tijuana dosent have it there also.  You just have to be smart and I think the warning is more for people who go down there to party at nighttime and go off the path of tourist parts.  From the different blogs I have read, dr almanzas office is good about taking care of you while there.  They know whats going on there more than we do and they are going to make sure your safe.

OMG we are very alike..That's reassuring because alot of ppl still tell me that I am "not that big" and that I don't really need to have WLS..but I know I have to do this as a preventative to other health issues down the road as well as my overall happiness..Besides I am considered obeast and that's enough in its self for me..I have heard the same thing about how Dr Almanza's office and drivers are with you at all times and this does make me feel alot better about the travel..I will be leaving at 2a.m. to return home on a 6a.m flight and it will probably be dark when I return, that's what makes me nervous..I wish I didn't have to travel so early..But I know the Lord will be with me...Just getting the last wk jitters..Thanks for the kind words Jenni..
