I made a huge list of phrases (especially medical ones) translated and never even pulled it out.  Thankfully there are quite a few staff members at Jerusalem Clinic that are bilingual and if there is one who only speaks Spanish, there always seemed to be someone bilingual nearby or we'd figure out how to communicate.  In the hospital, the nurse who set up the IV, etc did not speak English but he was so sweet and kind and could say at least what needed to be said.

I certainly felt more at ease having my emergency list of phrases nearby, though :)  Gotta be prepared!!  (I think my husband said more than 5 times that he wished he spoke Spanish...mostly because he wanted to express more than "gracias" to the staff for everything they did).
