Post-Op (in the US) prep
I am going to see my PCP tomorrow afternoon and will be explaining to her my decision to have the VSG...in Mexico. I would like to explain to her exactly what I will need from her when I return. I know that if I have a complication, I will need her (or someone) to treat me for possible infections, etc. but as we all try to keep a positive attitute: what will I definitely need to expect?
**Will I have stitches that will need to be taken out?
**Should I have her prescribe me an antibiotic to take after surgery?
**If I ask her for a "full gammot" of bloodwork, etc for pre-op to get a baseline, is there anything specifically I should ask to have tested?
Thank you so much for your input!

Each surgeon has their own way of doing things. I know that my surgeon sends us home with antibiotics and pain killers. He also has us do all of our pre-op bloodwork there before the surgery. Then he sends copies of all of the results and any images home with us for our PCP to have on file.
Interestingly enough, I told my PCP last night that I was scheduled for surgery in Mexico. He asked if I was excited about it and if I was comfortable with my decision. I said yes to both and he didn't mention another word about it. I guess I was expecting him to order some kind of testing... or something. I don't know. But he didn't and I'll just bring everything home with me for him to review.
Good luck to you!

My family doctor was a bit of a jerk when I first told him I was looking into this surgery as an option - he actually told me that all I needed was weigh****chers! So when I came back from my surgery, I've just been going to the walk-in clinic for any of my needs. Basically you might want to mention that you might need antibiotics and an anti-inflamatory perscribed to you for possible infection and pain, as well, 10 days out from your surgery you'll need your stitches to come out. After that you're A-ok!
As far as blood testing in advance, you might want them to look for poly cystic ovarian syndrome or any other issue that might make you a slow loser post-surgery, that way you can be proactive about it and get on the right meds in advance, and not get discouraged post-op.
Hope that helps?! Good luck with everything - I can't wait to hear all about your adventures!!!
Lighter dayz are just ahead!
I'm an RN and will have my PCP or a Dr I work with in the ER to write me a script for antibiotics that I will use as prophylactic, which means to be treated to avoid any infection. I will probably ask for it to be in liquid to ease it going down. I'm also going to ask for some liquid pain medication for the ride on the airplane back home to Mississippi. :( If you need anything let us know. Don't let your PCP make you feel bad for getting the surgery or even going to Mexico. It is your choice and your body. I wish you the best of luck. Maybe you and I will see each other in passing. :)
