Question about RNY in Mexico
I noticed that the majority of the ads for WLS surgeons in Mexico feature non-RnY procedures. The ones I see the most are LapBand and Gastric Sleeve (VSG). I was just wondering if anyone could tell me why that is? Why is RNY not as popular at the Mexican bariatric centers? Or is it that the demand coming from the States is less for the RnY? I am curious because I would like the RNY surgery, and I am sort of toying with the idea of having it done in Mexico (my insurance excludes WLS of any sort). But I want to make sure that they are routinely done there.

I had my Lap RNY in Monterrey Mexico in 2006 with Dr. Rumbaut. Best thing I think I have ever done in my life. It was the cleanest hospital you could ever imagine and then the follow-up care was awesome. Dr. Rumbaut and his staff Rock!!!! I am down 150 pounds and feel better than I have ever felt in my life. He was a little more expensive than some of the other doctors in Mexico but I did a lot of research and I felt comfortable with his background!! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Good Luck!!

My sister had the RNY surgery with Dr. Pompa a year ago. Her son went to her for lapband a few months later. (They are both doing GREAT!!!) The reason he went for the lapband was because of the cost. I'm going to Dr. Pompa on May 15, 2009 for RYN surgery myself. The reason why I'm choosing this surgery is because its seems to be alot faster lossing the weight and compaired to the lapband. Plus, my sister can eat pretty much the same foods as before the surgery, whereas my nephew he cannot eat foods such as breads for nothing at all.
Hi,
I had RNY surgey in Mexico over three years ago and did a lot of research before I went. It isn't that RNY is not popular there, it's just that there aren't very many EXPERIENCED RNY bypass surgeons there. Most of them only wanted to do the lap band because it was a fast surgery and they obviously can make more money doing more surgeries which is understandable. I had severarl surgeons who I contacted try to talk me out of RNY and have the lap band, but I knew if I would have had the lap band, it would not have worked well for me because I was addicted to liquid calories and sweets which will go right through a band. Still they tried to talk me into having the band. I got frustrated and put my surgey off for several months to think things over.
When I finally contacted my surgeon (Dr Horacio Guajardo), I just said I needed surgery but wasn't sure which one was best for me. He began asking me questions about my eating habits, my health, my family history . . .really detailed things. Then, it was him who said he would NOT recommend the lapband for me,, but specifically the proximal RNY surgery and he went on to explain why and then how the surgey was done, pre op diet, postop diet etc... He was so patient and detailed with everything and I felt very comfortable with him. After our nearly 2 hour phone call, I took a few weeks to think things over and then decided to follow through.
That was over three years ago and it's the best decision I've ever made for myself. I don't think I'd be alive today if I hadn't had this surgery.
I will say this. . .RNY is much more invasive than Lap Band or Gastric Sleeve and that said, it takes a surgeon with a lot of experience to put your mind at ease. It's so important to do your research and then try to narrow yoru choices down to about 3 surgeons. Then call and talk with them in detail. Have them give you advice, don't let them tell you what they think you want to hear!!! Some surgeons are experts at Lap Band, others with RNY and others with whatever! You need to find the surgeon that is an expert in what you need and you need to be 100 % confident in your decision before you go to Mexico for surgery. And for goodness sake. . .don't choose the one who is the cheapest!!! This is your health and your life, not a bidding war on E-Bay!!!
In my opinion,, the best RNY surgeons are in Monterrey, Mexico. It's the healthcare capital of the country and the medical and surgical care there is phenominal! I"ve been back to Monterrey about 8 times since my RNY to have other procedures done (even my hysterectomy) and my husband chose to have his second back surgery there with an orthopedic surgeon over a surgeon in the states. His first back surgey was a failure and the surgeon in Mexico fixed him!!! Wooohoooo. . . .
Sorry, I was getting a little off track there, but can't stress enough how great the care was and still is in Monterrey.
Anyway, best of luck to you!

Another reason the lapband is being pushed is the manufacturer, they have a vested interest in making the Lapband the procedure of choice. Just like drug companies they compensate doctors for prescribing their product. You will see advertisements for lapband on various websites too. You won’t see RnY adverts because there is no additional money in it. Since the RnY is more invasive there is also a greater risk of complications while you are still in their care which messes up their success rate numbers.
My mom had RnY in Oregon almost three years ago. I am planning to go to Monterrey this summer for RnY. We both feel the port-like fill station and obligation to have it adjusted would be a nuisance and won’t work as well.
