Banded in Mexico, just got back!
Hello All:
I wanted to give a first hand account on the situation in Mexico. I flew into San Diego airport on Monday, 4-6-09 and was picked up from the Dr's driver. We drove into Tijuana, it was less than 25 minutes going there, the hosital, Hospital Angeles, was about 5 minutes from the border.
Not even for a second during that ride to the hospital or in the hospital did I feel scared or threatened. I didnt witness any crime and the driver emphasized that what the news is reporting in exaggerated - I would have to definitly agree from what I witnessed and experienced (thank God!)
My husband and I never left the hospital, we stayed on the hospital grounds the whole time. I live in New York and have never been to or seen a hospital as beautiful, as clean, as accomodating and a "sterile" as Hospital Angeles - it exceeded my expectations!
Dr. Juan Antonio Lopez Corvala came referred to my by a chief bariatric surgeon from NYU Hospital. The doctor was great, he came to visit me twice and the rest of his group was great too - nutricitionist, psychologist, anesthesialogist etc, etc. Most of the staff was bilingual and rarely didnt I ever encounter a major langauage barrier.
I had a great experience and would do it all again. My neighbor told me I was play Russian roulette by going - I couldnt disagree more. Be smart, know who is picking you up, stay in the hospital and you will be FINE! Good luck to prospective Mexico banders!!!

thanks for the encouragement about going to mexico for surgery. I am scheduling to have my 14 year old son have surgery with dr verboonten in july. state department is warning people to carefully consider a trip to mexico due to the violence. i guess with a driver who knows where he's going it wouldn't be too bad. How long did it take you to recover and feel better after the surgery? Were you really walking around and up and about the next day? Sounds incredible. Well, you are on your way! Good luck!
