Which doctor?

I am seriously considering going to Mexico to get my bariatric surgery. My insurance won't cover it and I can't afford to do it in the states.  The procedure I need is the Roux en Y gastric bypass. Can anyone who has had this procedure done in Mexico recommend a doctor?

Dr. Ungson in Hermosillo has done hundreds of bariatric procedures.  He does both the RNY gastric bypass & the duodenal switch.  I was going for the RNY until I learned of the DS - in case you haven't heard of it, I would check out the duodenal switch forum.  I honestly feel that there are many advantages to the DS & it has been around for 20 years so it's not experimental.  I hadn't heard of it before I started researching WLS, not many surgeons do it b/c it's more complex.

If you go with Ungson for whichever procedure, it's easy to contact him by email [email protected] or 011 + 52 + (662) 217-5666.  The #'s on OH suck.  I only got the right # from the hospital b/c I speak some spanish.

Good luck in whatever you decide!  (but, seriously, check out the DS!)

Funny, right after I posted this question, I read something about the DS and I agree, I think it woud be a better procedure for me. I am already sensitive to sugar and starch and I already have the same physical reactions to it that is experienced in dumping so I think I would suffer even more with that procedure. I am looking into a few doctors who perform the DS procedure, including Dr. Ungson, Dr. Almanza-Reyes and Dr. Pompa-Gonzalez. They all seem well qualified but I'd like to hear about other people's experience before I decide. I won't be able to do this until May because I am still in school (my third degree. Damn this economy!)  Does anyone know how far in advance I would have to make arrangements to get this done in May?

The earliest I've heard is about 2 months, so I would actually start now b/c it's usually longer than 2 months.  Pretty much everything has to fall into place to have it happen within a 2-3 month period.  I would contact all 3 surgeons/ programs & get their procedures - steps you need to take, pricing, & typical length of time for everything to happen.  The DS board is pretty active, so if you want other's experiences with Mexican surgeons for the DS, then I would post on that board something like "DS surgeons in Mexico or Brazil (abroad?)"  - something like that to get the right people's attn, those who have gone overseas.  Please let me know if I can help you with anything!

I recommend Dr. Joya. for the Roux en Y.  He performed my surgery two years ago.    Research his information at www.drjoya.com.

Best of luck,

You should check to see if Dr Horacio would be a good option for you.  He's a super great surgeon and a wonderful person.

I had RNY in June 2006 with Dr. Aguirre in Ensenada. I had an awesome experience and results.

If you click on find a surgeon above in the blue bar you can see reviews people have posted about their Dr.'s both stateside and international.

Best wishes to you!

I am considering him for a DS surgery (i've changed my mind about an RNY; I think a DS would be a better option for me.) I am assuming you had him for an RNY? So far I am leaning towards Dr. Pompa for a DS but I haven't ruled out Dr. Almanza.  I think Dr. Ungson is just too expensive.

I was told on this website that Dr. Ungson charges $16K for a Lap procedure. i got a quote from Dr. Pompa for $13K for the same thing. I never got a quote from Dr. Almanza.

I'm not sure that Dr. Pompa has a lot of experience with the DS surgery. Other surgeries, yes, but with the DS, I just don't know anyone who has used her for that particular surgery.

Try Dr. Marchesini in Brazil. His patients LOVE him and he's cheaper than Dr. P and Dr. U. He is experienced with the DS procedure.
