Ahhh, I can feel your stress fairly pouring out of your post!!!  Some RNYers are able to eat pizza without dumping, in small amounts of course for those who can.  If it really is a concern, though, I would suggest you think twice & cut once - check out the duodenal switch.   I know myself pretty well & am pretty convinced that I would not be successful with the RNY.  It has much better stats 5-10 years out & you have a fully functioning stomach so you NEVER dumpt & you can ALWAYS taken anti-inflammatories.  There's a lot of bad info out there on it, so ask about your concerns on the duodenal swtich forum if this is something you really do want to think twice about.  I certainly wish you well in whatever you decide!

About the 2 week liquid diet - the reason is it shrinks your liver, which gives the surgeon more room to maneuver inside of you with less risk of knicking any organs, including the liver.  So, no it's not a strict deal breaker 1 week out yet, but it's definitely to your benefit.  Especially those few days leading up to it - you don't want to have food moving through your intestines!

Lisey,

I too was thinking about DS and still may this summer. I guess what scares me is the long recovery times DS'ers posted and all the bloodwork they have. Do you know if the bloodwork is for life? I was told with RNY that the blood work is for the first two years???

The most frequent bloodwork is done the year after surgery - 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, & 12 months.  Some people get it done at 18 months then, but most do it annually after the 12 month period.  There's been a few studies done on vitamin deficiencies with RNY & the DS.  The RNY also has some malabsorption, which is why you have to take vitamins to begin with, although definitely less than with the DS.  Given that, I think it would be highly ill-advisable to tell a patient they should only check their vitamin levels for the first 2 years with the RNY b/c the malabsorption with the RNY doesn't just go away after the first 2 years, I mean the reason RNY patients are told to take some vitamins for the rest of their life (calcium, multi,& some B-type, I think??) is due to the fact that you'll always have some malabsorption.  I personally think both should have annual blood work for the rest of your life, it's just that you could probably get less things/vitamins tested with the RNY follow-up labs than with the DS.

I think the DS rocks, but it does require a high amount of committing to taking various vitamins throughout the day for the rest of your life.  RNY does also, but not as many.  For the recovery - it should be fairly equivalent to the RNY b/c both the stomach area & small intestines are getting reaaranged.

I hope that's helpful & good luck with whatever you decide Ryssa!  If you do have more concerns or want more than just one person's opinion, I would post these questions separately on the RNY & DS board - I would leave the other title out, you know . . . avoid "RNY vs DS" b/c some people just get their panties in a bunch over it, but that way you'll get more opinions on it.

Have you considered the VSG. It is a restrictive only procedure. You can eat a normal diet with no worries about dumping.

How did your surgery go? You did end up having RNY?

Yes, Dr Joya and his team did my RNY on Feb 3rd. I flew home from PV on the 11th and was back to work on the 12th. So far so good, **he says knocking on wood**

Glad to hear you're doing so well!

Please keep me posted. I too would have to return to work immediately after surgery. The "what if "s are keeping me from committing. I was going to have it over spring break, but was afraid I wouldn't be ready to return to work.

So what are you eating still liquids?
