Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone who had their lap-band done in Mexico had a revision? I'm a potential Lap-bandster and a little worried that the band may not work for me. So just wanted to get other people exeriences with a fail MEXICO lap-band or problems.

HI Keeshia,

Gosh, you are in warm sunny Florida . . .I'm envous . . LOL  I live in Idaho and it's COLD here!  What I wouldn't give to walk on a warm beach right now . . .AAHHHHH!

I don't have a lot of free time to visit this forum anymore, but I try to pop in when I can to see what's going on with all the south-of the-border patients.   I read your post and wanted to take a few minutes to help you.  Well, try to help anyway. . .

Anyway,  I have had lapband in Mexico and it's proved to be a very good choice for me.  I lost 130 pounds!!!  WOOHOOO

I work in the field of weight loss surgery (part time) and I do a lot of volunteer work as a patient advocate. Fortunately,  I haven't needed a revison,  but I've had a lot of experience helping people who consider having revision and those who actually have revisions.

If you are  not 100% sure that the band is your best option, then maybe you should take a step back and re-evaluate all of the things that help determine which surgery is best for you.  In my experience, I've talked with a lot of people who chose lapband because it cost less than Roux-en-Y Bypass or the gastric sleeve  or other surgeries and wish they would have taken more time instead of juming right on the "band wagon." Sometimes, patients end up being ineligable candiates for a revision.

The reality is, not all patients are good lap band candidates and if they choose it anyway, they are not going to have good results and be faced with needing revision.    In addition, revison surgery can be very invasive and requires a very experienced and skilled bariatric surgeon who has had specialized training in revision surgeries.  There a a few excellent surgeons in Mexico who perform revision surgeries, but even in Mexico, revision surgery is not cheap.  Depending on the type of revision, I would estimate between $13,000 to $20,000! Yes, you can find doctors who will do it cheaper, but . . ."Buyer Beware."

Please do yourself  and your pocket book a favor and crunch the numbers.  Just as an estimated expample, why spend  $7,500 for lapband now (plus the cost for fills), then have to turn around and spend another $13,00 plus for a revision later on.  Not to mention having to go through two surgeries.  Saving a few thousand now might cost you triple that later on.

I know this must sound like I'm "lecturing" you,  but honestly, that's now my intention.  I'm just speaking from my own personal experience when I was considering which surgery was best for me.  I was overwhelmed  with all the "what if" questions.  It can be very confusing.  And, my experience with weight loss patients . . .it's very emotional when a WLS fails simply because the patient had the wrong surgery to begin with.  And, most cannot afford a revision.

If I can help you in anyway, or if you just need or want to chat for a while and talk about all the questons running through your brain like a pin ball machine right now, drop a reply or try sending me a personal e-mail and 'll give you a call.  Or, you can call me.  I just want to see you get it right the first time around.  To heck with having the wrong surgery  now and a revison later!

Sorry, I got a little carried away with all the little smiley guys . . .their just so darn cute!!!

Hope to hear back from you!

Take care and enjoy your warm weather!

Brigitte

Brigitte,
Thank You So much for your response. You truly help me when it comes to thinking about WLS. I will continue to do my research and question fellow bandsters. You made me smile and learn at the same time. I'm guessing it is just me being worried. I'm only want to lose 60 lbs and have been researching the lap-band for 2 years now. I will surely send you a message if I have any more question.  Thanks and continue success with you WLS.

You are very welcome and I'm happy to hear that you are going to think this over a little more.  Let me know what you decide.

Have a great evening!

i got the lap band on sept. 17th in Mexico and found out a few months later that i had a leak in it. To date I have only lost 7 pounds and am now considering MGB.

I wouldn't get MGB. All the good doctors quit doing it when they discovered how dangerous it is. You won't find a surgeon with a great deal of skill and reputation that does that surgery. It is too dangerous.

I had the gastric sleeve procedure in Tijuana Mexico with Dr. Ponce de Leon and everything was great. I know he performs gastric bypass and mini gastric bypass too, so just google him so you can learn more about his services. Its very important to choose an experienced doctor that knows what to do if a complication occurs. Also make sure you get your surgery done in a Hospital, clinics don't have intensive care units. Good Luck.
