Hi am a self payer scheduled for Nov 26 in PV with Joya.  I have already paid my deposit, Gerald with DR Joya has already sent me the airfare reservations.  Everything is set to go.

I am starting to see a lot of people who have gone with Aceves or Alvarez.  No matter who your surgeon is, out of the three, can you please tell me why you chose them and maybe why you decided against Joya?

Thanks, Brooke in Ga

HI Brooke!

All I can say is to trust your gut! You chose Dr. Joya for a reason. Go with it!
There are MANY good doctors south of the boarder. Everyone on here chose and most likely likes and will suggest the one they went to.

So trust your gut and your research.

I can say that I have NO, Zero, Zeta regrets from my choice of Dr. Joya and lap RNY.

No surgery is a 'sure thing'. There is no such thing out there. These surgeries are a tool they are giving us. A tool that is another chance at life!!!

Let me know if you have any questions and don't be afraid to ask any all that you have.

Enjoy the ride,
Susan

Dr. Joya has the best package. You don't have to worry about airfare, lodging, hospital, transportation from the airport to the resort to the hospital it is all taken care of, all in all a great package. The others don't have the hospital back up like the one Dr. Joya uses.
Questions pm me.

I researched and considered several surgeons in Mexico.  Research is key, and like others have suggested, going with your gut is important.  I have no regrets about choosing Dr Joya.  My criteria in choosing a surgeon was as follows:

How long had the surgeon been in the WLS business.

How many procedures had the surgeon performed (for me that was RNY).

How long had the surgeon been performing LAP procedures.

How many LAP procedures had the surgeon performed, and could he move to open if needed.

The surgeon credentials.

What the patients were saying about the surgeon.

The surgery package.

Hope this helps.  Good luck on your journey!

Ultimately, no one can legitimately say what one Dr. is like over the others as they don't have experience with anyone other than the one they chose.  You have made a good choice, Joya, Aceves, and Alvarez are the only VSG Dr.s that I would consider in Mexico.  My choice was great for me and I'm sure you'll have the same experience with your choice!

The only issue I have with Joya is how he handles complications.  I completely and totally disagree with him on that issue.  None of the other good doctors handle things that way.

How does he handle complications that makes you disagree so strongly? How do others handle them?

His $500 complication fee or not leaving the hospital until the bill is paid in full.  The other better surgeons absorb the cost themselves.

I myself am scheduled for RNY with Dr. Joya in October (the 20th to be exact).  I have already paid my deposit and will pay the $500 additional complication insurance fee.  If I were having surgery here in the states, it would be a given that if I had any complications, I would end up paying the difference so I was very please to be offered the complication insurance.    I am sure that Dr. Joya requires full payment before leaving PV to avoid the issue of repayment (or the possibility of nonpayment) once we leave Mexico.  I would imagine that it would be pretty hard to enforce payment from someone outside of the country.  Also, the hospital, the lodging, and the overall package works best for me.  Did I already say that I am soooo excited!?
