Okay so I put this on the main forum until I actually found a forum for MExico.  I Have a huge dilema here it is I am self pay there is no way my insurance will cover it.  Basically self employed, 5'5 280 lbs.  I have decided that I am doing this surgery the VSG.  I am like everyone else and worry about complications.  My insurance says that will not cover them  However my doctor has said if they are minor like ulcer, acid reflux things like this she will just treat me and not put   wls in the chart.  MY BIGGEST question is what happens if I have to go to the ER and have a serious complication do you have to tell them or will they not put it in your chart if they know the insurance wont pay.  Also if I go to a surgeon here in the US and have complications they wont cover it either.  I have found a surgeon that is not much more expensive than Joya in Mexico.  Is it worth it to go to Mexico or do I do it here.  My husband has saved the money for the surgery and he just wants me to make a decision so that we can get it scheduled.  I want to move on with my new life and begin my new adventure.  I have a good friend that went to Joya and when she was going through it she thought OMG I cant believe Im in Mexico doing this. After all was said and done she says it was great.  BUt had she been able to find a surgeon here that was the same money she probably would have stayed in the states.  I have read some posts about peoples experiences but how did you come to your final decision being in my same dilema. since all of you have first hand knowledge I would love to hear them  Look forward to your responses....

Hi There,
I did not have this type of surgery but you may want to contact this lady who will have surgery in a couple of days.

I had my Sleeve procedure done in MX and I was self pay as well. I could not find any surgeon in the states that I could afford to go to. There were some in OK and MI that were less than the others but when I had to foctor in plane fare and hotel expenses it became cost prohibitive.
I have not had any problems post op and my PCP is doing my routine follow up stuff covered under my health plan. I am hard pressed to believe that if I needed some sort of an emergeny procedure that the hospital and/or my health plan would let me die because of surgery I had in MX.
I could not have been happier with my surgeon and surgery process. I have had no problems post op and have had no problems eating or drinking. I have not experienced any of the gas or naseau I see so often here on the board with post ops.
It cost me about half ofwhat I would have had to pay in US and the hospital and care I received was top notch. The care was for more 1:1 and attentive than any other procedure I had in the uS.
Just my experience, some may agree and some may not but I know what worked for me.

So what from I take it your biggest concern is after care with ins? Think about this you could die without having this surgery with all the overweight complications. With having the sleeve done you are at a very low risk of having anything wrong. Having complications was the least of my worries. You have a greater chance getting in a car wreck than you do having the sleeve done.
I went to Joya because of the great surgeon he is and the package of what he has to offer if you go there. Have you been on his site and read the many stories? From the hospital to the staff to the nurses to the resort you stay at everything was great. Pm me if you have any questions.
