Aftercare after Mexico surgery?
My doc is supportive of my having RNY in Mexico, several of the nurses have gone there and had it done with good results; however, he says he doesn't want to do my aftercare because he wouldn't know what to watch for. He says I should go with a general surgeon. Should I try to get a local bariatric doc to see me? Will a stateside bariatric practice see someone who went to Mexico for surgery? Thanks!
Hi Beth, My PCP here in Phoenix told me he would do all he could for me. He is not a Bariatric doctor, just my PCP. He did mention that if something was to go wrong from my surgery, that then I would need to see a specialist, but he said the aftercare would not be a problem, eating right, taking my vitamins & protien intake. This site has sooooo much info that one could almost use this site for aftercare information.
Good luck to you

Dr. Valencia with obesityfree.com did my surgery in Mexico. Then he was kind enough to talk to my PCP and told him everything is needed to do my follow-up. Basically it is only blood work and once in a while B-12 shots. I am doing well and off all my Diabetes and High blood pressure medications.
Good luck in your journey and god bless.

Hi. Please, please take it from one who knows.
You need to have to aftercare set up in the U.S. Who is going to do your fills? 'what if 3 days later it's too tight & you need a little taken out? What if it's not filled enough? What if you get a port infection? Many U.S.docs won't touch someone who was banded out of the U.S, they won't assume the liability. Who is going to do an endoscopy when only a doctor familiar with WLS knows what to look for? My regular GI doctor readily admitted he didn't know a labpand from a rubber band. The nurse practitioner I had lined up for aftercare was able to line me up with the proper doctors.
If you live close enough to Mexico to go back & forth, that's great.
If I did not have someone here in NY to keep filling/unfilling me when I developed problems, I would have been really stuck. (no pun intended) If anyone's ever tried being filled by an unexperienced person, it's hell & dangerous to you.
I was banded by Dr. Ortiz and I absolutely love him. Now my insurance is better and I am being revised to RNY in the U.S.
This probably isn't what you wanted to hear, but it's the truth.
BTW, check out Lapbandtalk.com They have a Mexican Bandsters section, and this question is addressed many times over.
