Heading to Ensenada on May 8th
Yup. I'm going to have my RNY with Dr. Aguirre on May 8th 2007. Can I tell you how excited I am?!
I've been reading all about Ensenada and Dr. Aguirre from everyone's profiles, and am very confident in my decision to go with him. Just wanted to let you all know.
Mexico probably would not have been an option had there not been for the SOTB forum and all you guys. Thanks!
That's all for now.
Chances are I'll be posting questions on here later...so, you'll hear from me again!
Hi:
New to the site. I am going to Ensenada also!!. I am having the Lap RNY with Dr. Valencia. Would you mind commenting on the costs?? I am in a very tight budget but I know it has to be laparoscopic....sorry I might be a big chicken....but just wouldn't handle being cut open. I expect to pay 12500 for the surgery.
Thank you for your help,
Julian
I am still trying to find flights at a good deal before I send my deposit........in case we need to change the dates. But I am scheduled for the 19th of June now. I don't know how I can wait that long though! It is all I think about. Please tell me; did you have bypass? How long until you felt "normal"? How long til you felt ok? Did you go home with a drain tube? How long were you just on liquids? What kind of foods did you first eat? What foods could you not and still can't eat? I need lots of info! thanks! Neisha
Hi Neisha, are u going to Dr. Aquirre too? If so heres my experience. Dr.A is great as was his staff. The hospital is so clean you could eat off the floor and you recieve excellant care. The pain was very minimal and I only spent 2 days in the hospital. By the 4th day I was walking the strip looking for souvieners!! I stayed 9 days and my tube and staples came out on the 8th day. Its 4 days before you can have anything to drink, that was the hard part, and on the 5th day you can eat. My first meal was soft fruit like bananna, kiwi, cantelope,...I got it in the restaurant at the hotel I stayed in. Its soft foods for the firt 4 weeks and then you can add white meat like chicken or fish. then at 8 weeks you can add red meat and at that point pretty much any food you can tolerate. I have had NO problems and my pouch tolerates it all pretty well. I can also eat what seems like a good bit, of course not anything like pre-op, but even a half cup sometimes looks like alot to me now. You'll do fine and you'll love Mexico. Let me know how it goes and tell everyone hello for me.
Mary
Hi Mary, Thanks for your response. Congratulations on doing so wonderful! Why did you stay 9 days instead of 8? It surprises me how you had soft foods first. I've had a friend who had this done in the states and can only have liquids and that is how it will be for the first 3 weeks. Any suggestions on what I need to bring with me to make my stay more enjoyable. I wrote a LONG letter to TracyW and if I can pull that back up and post it I will. Some of it is redundant but I'll put it out there in case it spurs any more thoughts. Thanks again! Neisha
Mary, here is the letter I sent to Tracy. If you can think of any more to tell me that would be great! Although this is a RE to May 8th, I'm scheduled for June 19th. Thanks again!!!
I sent you a quick reply earlier but I still have a few more questions I wanted to ask. I read everything you have posted.
My story: About 10 years ago I had Vertical Gastric Banding (VGB)..........it didn't work. I now know that about 95% of all the people that have had this done have gained back all of their weight. I only lost about 50 lbs. with it and really needed to lose between 100 or 120. I could always eat just about anything, just smaller portions but in 15 or 20 minutes could go back for more. If I did overeat, it was not unpleasant or painful, it would just come back up. I really never could drink with meals but just within this past year have been able to a little. My mother had bypass done about 22 years ago. She is 5'8" and got down to about 130. She has probably gained about 35 lbs of that back within the past few years. It worries her but she looks fabulous still. She is now 62 so a little extra weight looks better on her. Here are my concerns:
Until a few years ago she really couldn't eat sugar and will get VERY ill if she did. She will still get sick if she has too much but not always. She still can not tolerate milk products. From reading everyones responses, many people can have these things. Can you? There still is no way she can drink with her meals. I saw where you can. She also can not tolerate alcohol. I am curious if the surgery has lots of differences that are allowing these things. Did they shorten your intestines? I know how the surgery is performed and I have not seen where it is listed that the intestines were shortened. Her intestines were shortened and I am wondering if this is where some of the differences lie.
My husband fears me having the surgery. I understand that but I am still going to do it. He really worries about me going through a depression over the loss of eating. That really doesn't concern me because I know the depression I get from eating. He doesn't see that though. I am good about hiding that weakness. Did you go through a depression over the loss of eating? My mother never really remembers that because she said it felt so good to be losing. The depression part really does scare me though. Like many with this problem I have had deep bouts of depression and anxiety and take medication for this. Many do not ever see this side of me and only view me as a very strong woman. Pain I can handle. More depression I can't. The thought of going into a depressive state terrifies me. I know I am really going off on this but I want to know what to expect.
Speaking of what to expect..................................I realize I will get more info when I send my$500 deposit and make flight arrangements but I still have 2 1/2 months to go and don't want to pay $ and then the flight can't get scheduled on the day I need, etc. But I do want to get all things lined up. I'm making some excuses I guess. Putting that $$$ down means it's happening and I want all my questions answered before I do this. I AM DOING THIS...........I just want my questions all answered first. It is not that I am unsure, I just want to go into this with all the information possible. So here are some more questions..........................What kind of pre op stuff did you have to do in the U. S. first? Any? What kind of post op diet did you use? When did you start eating again, not liquids, but real food. Where are some sites you go to for protein drinks? What are your favorites? Did your mom stay with you the entire time you were in Ensenada? Anything you would suggest I be sure and take with me?
I know I have vented and listed a lot. Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you,
Neisha
