Hi, I'm scheduled for Lap Band with Dr. Aceves on March 12th. I'm not nervous about the surgery, but am wondering if anyone has checked into the possible long term results of silicone in the body? Anyone have any problems? Thanks.

The band is not filled with silicone it is filled with saline(spl?) hope this helps. BTW Saline is the stuff they give you in an IV so it is safe. Good Luck and GOD bless Cari

Thank you so much for responding, but I was referring to the band itself. I think it is silicone.

Yes, The band is silicone and can erode into the stomach. My cousin Perla had it removed and then converted to a by pass. Patty

Head over to the Lapband forum for answers! As for eroding, it can happen but is very rare.

Most problems with silicone is a person's body are rare... but if they happen the problems are harsh, painful and very difficult to have people in the medical profession accepts...  Silicone is their friend....  If you look closely at the documentation put out by Iamed they have some fine print state in there about people being alergic to latex not getting the band... while silicone and latex are different substances... I am allergic to latex, and the silicone from my ban (4 years ago) has cause me not end of hell, pain, and discomfort.  There seems to be no test before surgery and I have found only a hand full of people who have suffered like I have (most have been breast implant patients), but I can tell you one thing... you will know with in a few months after the surgery if the silicone is harming... and if it is you will want it out of your body... Other than those sad words.... The lapband is an awsome tool and has helped so many people... and I don't regret trying it.... But I do so look forward to having my revision to RNY and ending the ongoing pain I have live with for these long 4 years.
