I wish I had a good answer for you but I don't know anything about pain meds.

just wanted to tell you I know somebody on OH who had joint pain to the point where she thought she might have rheumatoid arthritis. turned out to be a vitamin D deficiency!

do you get any relief from  - soaking in ho****er? (bathtub, hot tub, therapy pool at the Y

massage?

might not be any help but I had to make a suggestion!

Hi Kathy,
I have also taken Ibuprofen on occassion, but have had the bleeding ulcers before and after my RNY.  It is like doing a tap dance in a mine field with me.  My rheumatologist had me on Celebrex for during the winter, and gave me Prevacid to counteract the effects it would have on my pouch.  Problem is, she told me to back off on taking it when the weather got nice because it does have side effects that could damage the heart.  I would do more cardio exercise for this pain, but my recent foot injury has sidelined me.

Sorry to whine.

I am hoping to find some relief soon.

Trish

she has given a good list. everybody is different and you need to try stuff and make your own list of what works for you

I call people I haven't talked to for too long - with a cell phone there is no reason not to call long distance - surely you have a cousin you haven't talk to in years or something? look up people from when you were in school.

I really like outdoor stuff like raking leaves, mowing, pulling up weeds.

learn a craft - that's an excellent idea. anything you've always wanted to do but never tried? or enjoyed years ago and haven't done lately? like to travel? plan a trip.

I personally tend to take up horseback riding this summer!

good luck!

it sounds like at the very least you aren't getting enough nutrition. protein, for example. and, yes, maybe you are becoming anorexic.

does your surgeon have a nutritionist and a therapist you could talk to? you need to get some professional help.

I hope you had surgery not just to lose weight but to become more healthy and living for days on crackers and vitamins is not good.

take care of yourself!

Trish,
I'm sorry you are in pain.  I hate to admit this, but I do occasionally take NSAIDS.  I am 5-1/2 years out.  Ibuprofen doesn't bother my pouch.  Naproxen (Alleve) makes pouchie gurgle, but no pain.  As long as I use them sparingly, I am ok.  I even got the ok from my surgeon to do this, but only because I'm really far out.  I know people will come back and say you're never to take NSAIDS, but, I cannot walk around in pain.  Tylenol does not work for me.  I also found that by asking for prescription strength Ibuprofen and Naproxen, instead of the over the counter stuff, the pain relief seems to last longer.  Being a recovering alcoholic myself, I am on constant vigil about what I can and cannot take.  I don't believe we can abuse Ibuprofen or Naproxen.  Feel better.  Kathy

As some of my friends know, I have been in outpatient treatment for my alcoholic relapse since October.  I had switched treatment centers in January, and also had sinus surgery in February.  Last week, I graduated from Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and now attend group once a week.  I am absolutely thrilled with the care I am receiving at this center, which has satellite offices throughout the Philadelphia area, in case anyone needs a recommendation of a facility.  Malvern Institute has the best outpatient program around.

Anywho, I have been having off and on body aches since October, and had been seeing a rheumatologist.  Now, I have a really bad case of tendonitis in my foot, and have been having excruciating pain when I walk, even though I do have a special boot to wear most of the time.

My bind is that I cannot take NSAIDS or anti-inflammatories because of the gastric bypass, and had a relapse abusing Vicodin in March because of the pain killers.  Which basically leaves me with Tylenol, OTC.  I am scheduled to see a new orthopedist for the foot on Thursday, and a new rheumatologist for the body aches, as I had also had some positive bloodwork showing symptoms of Lupus.

BUT, I am in pain NOW!!!!!  I am about ready to go to the emergency room for help, because I just cannot take the pain any longer.

Does anyone know of any pain medications for people who cannot take the anti-inflammatories or the opioids?

Hugs,
Trish

When I was in treatment for Binge Eating Disorder, I met a woman who was anorexic and she had gastric bypass previously.  It is possible to become anorexic.

I strongly suggest you seek individual psychotherapy for this, as it does sound like eating disordered behavior.

God bless.

Boost your self-esteem by becoming involved in activities that interest you. Discover your passion!

· Go online and talk with an online friend.

· Imagine yourself in a safe place where you do not need to think about doing anything that is harmful to yourself.

· Make a list of positive affirmations. Pick one, look at yourself in the mirror and say if morning and night for 21 days. The affirmation will become a part of you!

· Get a massage. You can get pretty inexpensive massages at any school that teaches massage.

· Walk your dog or play with you cat.

· Make a list of some nice things you would like to do for your friends.

· Think about taking some classes or doing something to help you discover your passion.

· Tell your parent, husband, partner, or friend that you love them.

· Make a list of what you are grateful for. This is tough when you are stressed, but if you write it down, the act of writing will help!

Thanks for the advise. A list of coping skills would be great.

You may wish to check out individual therapy and learn some coping skills.  I went to eating disorder treatment twice and learned a bunch.  There are alternatives to eating when we have loneliness, or boredom.

Be totally honest with everyone.  Go to pre-op support meetings and talk about your concerns.  You are not the only person to have this surgery and be an emotional eater.

I will try to find a list of coping skills to post.
