will it work?
The test that is done is called a pulmonary function test. Basically, you blow into a machine.... to test your lung capacity and strength.
PLEASE DO NOT SMOKE!!!!
Passing or failing the test is an indicator of a degree of lung damage. In other words, you would have failed or passed anyway.. a week would not change that.
Right....
I smoked for 10 years when i took my lung function testing, and I passed. The lung doc told me I was lucky. I have not smoked since.
The reason why they give this test is pretty much to see if your lungs can withstand the prolonged time on the vent. Even if you had lung damage and did not do well on this test, that would not mean your surgery was cancelled. It would just be important information to share with the anesthesia doctor, who would then get certain respiratory (lung) medications incorporated into your plan of care while asleep.
Use this time not smoking to re-eval your need to smoke post op. I did, and decided that since I was changing my lifestyle and trying to get healthy, why not NOT start smoking again. At first the idea seemed crazy, but right after surgery, the last thing you will want is a cigarette. Take one day at a time. My husband still smokes, but I chose not to.
Good luck
