Risperdal - Acute Mania

I'm 6 months out and Bi-polar.  I just saw the psych and he diagnosed me with acute mania (it's been almost 3 years since my last episode).

He prescribed me Reserdal and I cannot find any "good" information in regards to GBS patients.  Can anyone give me any insight as to what I'm in for?

I have been on Risperdal for what seems like forever.  I can't speak to the gastric bypass surgery, as it has been effective both pre- and post-op for me with my mania.  It has a powerful sedative effect, and helps me stay calm when I am in rough stressful situations.  I hope he told you to take it in the evening.  I had a bad episode, because I was not taking it as prescribed in January, and ended up in the hospital.  I am now prescribed 1 mg in the morning and 2-3 at bedtime.  It takes time to adjust to it.  I hope you do well on it.

Hugs,
Trish

Thanks Trish!

At this point I HATE it!  I was prescribed .5 mg pills, 1/2 to 1 twice a day and 1 to 2 at night.

I have to crush them to actually have them work although I was told he will order them in liquid or orally disintegrating tabs on Monday.

Have you had any problems absorbing them?  Do you take it daily or is it only when you have an episode?  How quickly does it bring you down?

The 1/2 to 1 during the day is as needed.  Do I take this when I'm feeling amped up?  I guess I have more questions for the doc tomorrow!

My prescription is not PRN, or as needed.  I must take them daily to keep me stable.

I was never told to crush them.  My pills are rather small, and must dissolve rapidly, because they knock me out.

The pill in solid form makes me really groggy for the first 30 - 45 minutes, then it's gone and I seem more amped up than before.  The surgeon's office and my psych both think it just doesn't have enough time to dissolve before moving through me, which is why they suggested crushing.

I'll let you know what I find out.

Thanks again for your replies!
