Meds Not Working?

Has anyone experienced their meds not working after surgery?  I've been taking Geodon and Topamax for quite a while.  My depression seems to be worsening.  I've left a message for my doctor but she hasn't called me back yet.

My medications did not stop working after my surgery, though I have heard of it occurring for some people.  The other reason your depression may be worsening could be that you are now having to deal with life without using food to numb your feelings.  That is what happened to me, and I ended up drinking again because of it.

Are you in regular psychotherapy?  Have you gotten a list of coping skills for when you are struggling with your feelings?  These help me considerably, though I am struggling most recently because of my alcohol relapse.

Hope this makes sense.

Hi Trish-
Thanks for responding.  You're right about having to cope without using food.  I used it for every feeling, good, bad or indifferent.  Now when I want to eat I can't, and when I don't want to eat I have to to reach my protein goal.  I used to feel like the only thing I could control was my food, and now I can't even control that!  It's controled for me by the number of grams of protein I have to take in!

There is definitely a period of adjustment to go through during the first year.  Mine was made challenging by the fact that at 7 weeks out, my 40 year old brother died suddenly, and then my daughter announced she was pregnant (which was good news.)  I was on a rollercoaster for the first two years.  After my granddaughter was born, my older son got married in a huge affair halfway across the country.

Coping skills help me, when I use them.  Problem is, I tend to not use them consistently.

Hang in there.

Trish

I saw your post that the doc is now going to give you prozac in addtition.

not sure what kind of doctor you are seeing but do they know about WLS? I know  some meds are not absorbed normally with RYN so I wonder if your doctor is up on this?

have you posted your question on the RYN board or even sent a pm to somebody like Andrea U?

Jackie

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

Jackie -

Who is Andrea U?

My physchiatrist works with Eating Disorder patients at Kaiser.  I would like to think she understands dosing for RNY patients, but I guess you never know.

she has had RNY and I think of her as a vitamin guru - she has had big problems post-op because of crappy vitamin advice from her doctor and so has done a lot of research to take care of herself.

yes, hopefully your phych does understand it but...if I were you I'd research myself.

it's not like you can be too well informed and it's so important.

I did pm Andrea and she said she's no expert on this issue but I'll bet somebody is. just have to find them.

but if you have a vitamin/mineral issue, she's the one.

You need on an antidepressant for depression. Geodon is an anti-psychotic and topamax is a mood stabilizer. Ask for an antidepressant like lexapro or wellbutrin.
