I never smoked, but I will share what I know and what concerns are there.

For the surgery, you will have oxygen tube in you to make sure you are breathing while under anasthesia.  Your blood oxygen level is vital.

After the surgery, you will be visited by a respiratory therapist, who will have you breathing into a thing, and your lung capacity prior to surgery, will make your post op breathing exercises easier.

I have heard that smoking cigarettes after surgery can cause the suture lines, where the staples are, to not heal as effectively.  I have also heard that smoking post-op can cause ulcers.

If your doctor tells you to quit smoking, then quit smoking.  If you are unable to do so without help, ask Doctor for Chantix, or the patch.  If you are unwilling to quit, then maybe you are not ready for surgery.  This surgery causes an entire lifestyle change.  Not complying to the doctors' requirements to quit smoking shows an unwillingness to make the changes necessary for success.

Just my humble opinion.

I would like to add that at some time in the WLS process drinking that you are trying to keep under control would likely escalate.  I would suggest that  you work to become a non drinker before considering surgery.  Again, going to AA meetings would be a good place to start.
