What do you do?

Hi Everyone,
I am very active on the PA Forum, as that is my home state.  Whenever a new patient asks about alcohol, like what kind of alcohol is best to try, I always share that I don't know, and to be careful because of the risk of addiction transfer.  I mention being on this forum and hearing stories about people who develop alcoholic drinking behaviors after surgery.

Tonight I got my head bit off for it, and it was by someone who professes to be a mental health professional no less.  I really am not going to stop warning people, because there are a lot of people who just have no clue.  I just was wondering what you all do when asked, if you are asked, by new patients venturing out to the bars right after surgery.

Thanks,
Trish

Having 13 years in I know that it is very possible to switch addictions.. I do warn people the same way you do but I also add that I would try it at home first in case they have problems with dumping..

People wear their feelings on their sleeves so to hell with it..

I think you are doing people a service by mentioning the dangers.s  I wouldn't worry about the one person who bit your head off - there might be some defensiveness there due to issues he/she has of their own.

I did not fully understand the very high probability that I would develop a drinking problem when I had WLS.  I realize all people are different, and to be honest, I probably wouldn't have done things differently even if I'd known, but I really didn't know.  There are some people out there with a bit more prudence than I possess, who might just think twice about drinking post-WLS.

Information is important.  Keep doing the good stuff - don't worry about the detractors :)

Love ya,
Michelle
