Depression???

It's been three months since my WLS and things could not have gone better.  I've lost 104 pounds and am doing things that I really couldn't have done before the surgery.  However, I think I may be suffering from depression.  I went to a BBQ today and basically sat in the corner, not speaking to anyone,  I just didn't know what to say to anyone.  I think that because I have been isolating myself for years, that now I don't know how to interact with people.  I felt like such a loser.  And people kept sitting with me because they felt sorry for me, which made me feel worse.  Does anyone have any thoughts on how I can handle these feelings?  Currently, I am not on any medication and don't know how I feel about being on medication.

What you are experiencing sounds like depression, and can be helped without medication, especially if you never really experienced it before your weight loss surgery.  You should consider psychotherapy, and possibly a support group.  The hospital where I had my weight loss surgery offers support groups once a month for the patients who are pre-op and post-op.  I have been in therapy for years, before and after my surgery.  If your hospital does not offer a support group, see if your state forum has people who participate in a support group.  I am active on the PA forum, and we have people all over who are hosting support groups and active in them.

Good luck.

Feel free to post your feelings and experiences here until you get help and even afterward.

Hello.. and welcome to the board.

I'm sure no expert in this.. so what I would recommend is calling and just speaking with your doctor first about this.

Are you in any support group for WLS in your area?  If not,  I would recommend that also.  You may find many there going thru the same thing.  It might be a great way to *open up* and learn to socialize more in a more comfortable setting for you.

I personally did not go thru that, but rather the opposite.  I lost alot of weight and found I wanted to *celebrate* my new self.  That is what help contribute to my faster addiction to alcohol.. it help loosen me up so I did talk and become the *party*.    I had to seek help for that.. and have been sober since 11-06.

Best wishes,
Rhonda

I definitely agree with getting involved in a support group. Heck even getting involved more here and on your state board is a start. Also as others stated see a doctor. Hey nothing wrong with being on medication even if it is just short term

SUpport group saved me from so much destructive behavior.  I met so many wondeful people like me who were going through the same process and who understood. That was the key. Then I could start relating to other people and come out of my shell.

Good luck
