I fell off of the nicotene wagon

JUST DAYS BEFORE MY PRE-OP!! I don't know what to do.  Saturday was 28 days since I had smoked my last cigarette and that night we went to play Poker with some friends of ours.  I wasn't feeling well, I was out of the game early this time, and I broke down and bummed a cigarette off of one of a friend.  It felt fabulous to smoke it.  Then Sunday night, my husband and I went to a casino and when we stopped for gasoline, I purchased a pack.  I told my husband that this would be one night of amnesty since you "have to smoke" when you're gambling, and he agreed (very reluctantly) not to give me **** about it.  Well, I probably smoked 5 cigs all night, leaving 3/4 of a pack and I had one tonight.  Obviously, I cannot keep them around, so I asked him to get rid of them for me, but now I am freaking out because my pre-op is in 2 days!!  I am guessing that they will be testing me for nicotene, and so beyond feeling REALLY REALLY guilty now about this, I am freaking out about the possibility of the Dr. postponing or canceling my surgery.   Any advise???  I know I screwed up big-time, so where do I go from here??

Hi!  I quit 20 years ago or so, but I remember well the feeling of needing a cigarette when 'gambling, drinking coffee, picking up the phone, starting the car, waking up', etc.  I'm not sure what the docs stand will be, since I quit so long ago and it wasn't a factor for my surgery. I'm sure things will work out for you! What's the worst that could happen? They pu**** back a month? Try not to lose sight of the prize here. You want and need the surgery.  The physical addiction takes about 3 days to leave your body. The mental addiction takes longer and is harder to do.  You're not alone, hon!  I had a friend who picked it back up after 12 years of being cigarette free.  Don't be too hard on yourself, but do what your doc recommends as best you can. This is a death defying surgery. (and keeping the creosote out of your lungs is ALWAYS a good move!) LOL...  Take care, Marie

First of all, understand that nicotine addiction is an addition, just like any other.   Don't beat yourself up over it. Second, be totally honest with the doctors, because your lungs must be in their best health for this surgery, and if you lie, your life  could be on the line.   Third, ask your doc for help, like Chantix, or the Patch.  You don't have to kick this habit all by yourself.   The most important thing is to be as healthy as you can be during surgery, and have the best outcome from surgery as possible. Hugs, Trish
