Topamax for alcoholism

Anyone ever taken topamax to help with alcohol cravings?  How did it work?

I have not.. sorry.  But welcome to the board.

I was on Topamax and drank while on it.  I was on it for mood stablization.  I am supposed to be on it now, but am having trouble with it.  I see my doc in a week, so I will talk to him then. Good luck. Trish

Did you find that it helped you control the amount of alcohol you consumed?

I drank more than I ever drank in my last relapse, while on the Topamax.  The quantity was much more than before.  I am probably the exception. Good luck. Trish

I am on topamax for migraines, but it very much has helped me with alcohol cravings. I haven't had a drink now for just over 5 months. I take 100 mg twice a day. Even when I took 50 mg twice a day it helped with the cravings. The reason it was upped to 100 mg's was because I was still getting headaches. I also have been in therapy for alcohol, but I would say that I could really feel the alcohol cravings die down after being on topamax after about 3 weeks. Melanie

I personally have not heard positive things about Topamax. However, I hear wonderful things, and I choose to take Campral.

I am an alcoholic. Campral works for me. Oddly, when I don't take the campral as prescribed, sneaky little thoughts of drinking climb back into my head. This med does not make you sick if you do decide to drink, it curves the cravings and balances out your brain so the urges for drinking do subside.

I'm a firm believer in this pill.
