anyone drink beer
Before surgery I never drank because I only drink when I go out and at 340lb I never wanted to go out, well now I go out like 4 nights a week, most of the time I am the DD so that i am not tempted to drink and most other people that we have designated as driver in the past end up drinking anyway so that has made my possibility of drinking less but I did feel that I got really drunk off one beer and then it was like all over in 1 hour. Can anyone tell me the effects of alcohol on RNY patients, I am 10 months out and down 140lbs thank you ~Julia
Julia,
As I understand it alcohol is very hard on our livers due to the surgery. Our livers are often already at risk due to the stress of obesity. I know this is a overly simplistic explaination but bottom line that is it. Many of us have addictive personalities. Some of us begin to substitute food with other things. Many of us get drunk post op on much less alcohol than pre op which only adds to the problem and can help us delude ourselves to the problem because we drink so little to get drunk.
Only you can determine if it is a problem. I read posts all the time from people who drin****assionally without it being unmanagable. That is not my experience. My advise is to have a heads up to the possibility that you may be at risk. Be painfully honest with yourself as to your drinking habits and how it is affecting your life. You may be able to handle it. Maybe not. Congrats on your success with your weight loss!!!! Going out and enjoying yourself is a good thing. Be careful because as you have learned our systems tend to absorb the alcohol differently. Glad you posted.

I can so relate! I picked up smoking post op after quitting for 14 yr. I have to check myself daily to see if I am acting out because I can find ways not drug or alcohol related to feed my addiction. Lately shopping is an area I have been a bit over the top on. When I start finding justifications for my behavior it is a red flag!
Best wishes,
Laurie
