Average weight loss just after surgey
I'm just past 5 weeks out from RNY and am down about 38 pounds as of today. My wife says I am losing too fast. I admit I am most likely not getting all of my protein in for the day (averaging about 35-45 g per day) but I feel pretty good. To the veterans on this board, what was your weight loss like at this point in your "recovery?" Am I losing to fast? Am on track? Just curious.
I lost about 25# in the three weeks leading up to surgery. At five weeks post surgery I had lost an additional 39# for a total of 64#.
Don't worry about losing too fast. Relax and enjoy the ride. Lose what you can while your still in the "honeymoon" phase. Its the first step. The weight loss will slow as you keep losing and you increase your calories, which you will do at some point.
Maintaining your protein is important. You should work on that. Also, drink, drink, drink - water.
Great job so far.
Doesnt sound like a problem to me. For reference/context:
my high weight was 321.
The day I came home from surgery I was 288.8.
Three weeks later I was 266.4.
Its hard to get all your protein in at the beginning. I think it sounds like youre doing great.
Wives are supposed to worry. Its what they do.
I went from 288 to 258 in about 7 weeks so I think that is about right especially since you were bigger to start with than I was... I started at 336 with my pre-op diet.

It's been 9 years...Sorry I don't remember. I do remember losing 10 pounds in 1 week. Work hard to get that protein and water in...Sip sip sip!! Men lose the weight faster that women...We have a larger muscle mass, so the weight drops quickly. Also know the signs of dehydration...It's the # 1 reason WLS people reenter the hospital. One of the problems with the rapid weight loss is the possible loss of muscle mass. It will come back somewhat. I think I remember I could bench press maybe about 180-190 before surgery. After surgery it was only like 120. You lose some muscle with all that fat. You're healthier but it can be an issue. Also you can rebuild that muscle, but it can take up to a year to gain it back...And you may never fully gain all the former strength back. SO!! Work really hard the first 6 month in getting that protein in...Even if you aren't hungry and don't feel like eating. Brian PS I remembered a little trick I used...Forget about this one, it may help. Put 1/2 to 1oz of milk by the side of your bed. When you get up to pee at night (since you are sipping away), have a small amount of the milk. Replace every night.
Hello, I was losing pretty fast as well. had my sleeve June 15, 2015. Had my 6 month post op visit and the weight loss was excellent. But my blood count was not. They said my wbc was low 3.2 and was vitamin d deficient, b-12 deficient , aniemic and losing muscle. I have been exercising 3 to 4 times a week most of the time. Started lifting weights and feel pretty good. But know I am scared. They want me to see a hematologist. I had a high and went to a low within 10 minutes. My highest weight was in February of 2015 (400lbs) and weight in January 21, at(301 lbs) but then got the news about my wbc. I must admit that at times I may not have been getting all my proteins in and taking my vitamins as routinely but since then has been making an effort to do better. Have you or anyone that you know have had any issues with low wbc counts.
Unfortunately, I don't know of anyone with a low blood count. I am taking the sublingual B-12 and a twice a week Vitamin D supplement. I was taking the icon but I surmised that it was making me EXTREMELY constipated. I stopped taking that and for now am relying on my twice-a-day multivitamin. I have a blood draw scheduled for next week and a follow up with the NUT the following week so I should now then how my levels are. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
Thanks to all! I read some of your replies to my wife and now she isn't as worried (I hope!) Did a better job of getting my protein in today. Had a 20 g protein drink for breakfast, 1/2 cup of chili with beans for lunch and a 20g Premiere Protein bar for a snack. Just have dinner to go and I should be all set!
