Hi guys!  The original poster (BorathIII) is my almost 27-year old son.  He's done phenomenally well with his weight loss (down 132 lbs at just shy of 7 months) but continues to have difficulties which are keeping him from returning to his regular work.  His surgeon told him he's his second-fastest loser ever and thinks that his body is having trouble adjusting to the rapid loss, and things should resolve... BUT, as I said, it's almost 7 months out.  I'm curious to see if any other young, fast-losing guys had any of these problems, and whether they eventually resolved:

  • Intolerance to physical activity.  As in, after 10 or 15 minutes of exercise, he starts feeling funny--sounds like of like a blood pressure drop with lightheadedness, funky vision, rapid heartbeat, getting pale, feeling like he could collapse.  This makes getting his strength and stamina back very challenging.
  • Speaking of strength...gone.  This kid was very, VERY freakishly strong before surgery, and last month could hardly hold up a stack of jeans at the store to pull out a pair from the bottom.  Coming back very slowly as  exercise is causing the above issue.

One problem feeds the other.  He's been working hard on getting his protein, vitamins, and supplements in most days and is making progress.   Little by little he can go longer before getting "funky" and having to stop, but he couldn't put in a half-day at his regular job right now (construction) if he tried.  He's frustrated, we're frustrated--did anyone else have issues like these, this far out??  Thanks!

This thread "made a left turn at Albuquerque" as they say with the protein discussion so I've been kind of ignoring it.

That said, being an old fart I didn't know how I could relate, since the question for asked about young people with similar issues.

Anywhoo, I have not had the same experience so I don't have much to add. I hope he is doing better. It sucks to go through the surgery process and not feel better. In order, my suggestions are:

1) See your Dr ASAP

2) Make sure your Iron and B12 are in order.

3) See your Dr ASAP

After 7 months, assuming He's eating correctly, he should have energy to spare. And that was with my 53yr old body.

I hope he's feeling better, and we'd like to hear about his progress.

By 2-3 months out I was taking all of my vitamins on schedule everyday. Maybe he has some deficiencies because he's not getting everything in? Why is he having such difficulty with his vitamins? Does he get 100gr protein daily? By now much should come from meat (at least for DS) - I aim for at least 150gr

I still have problems getting dizzy when I stand up, I know when I stand and walk 10ft it will hit me so I'm ready for it. As for losing muscle it's pretty hard not to when you drop weight as fast as many WLS patients do. I lost 200lbs in 8 months (almost half my body) and I'd say I was about half as strong as I was before surgery according to what I could lift in the gym. Can't build muscle with lots of protein, that's the only time I get protein from a drink - right when I leave the gym from lifting.
