to few calories? cross post

hi,

So I just came from my Dr for my 6 week post sleeve op check up.  I am doing really great...the veritable poster child for Cedars Sinai Center for Weight Loss Surgery.  I have lost 42 pounds since surgery and have not had 1 single instance of nausea, heartburn, or trouble getting my fluid and protein intake.

So after the surgeon, I met with the dietician.  She says that I am eating far to few calories a day and wants me to bring that up.  To give you what I have been doing...I have been eating between 650 and 750 calories a day and have been hitting my protein goal of 90g per day.  So I've basically mainly been consuming protein with very little fat and very few carbs.  The weight has been falling off and I love it.

I am a male, 5'11 and she says that after 6 weeks (now) I should be on between 1100 and 1300 calories per day.  Wow, that seems like a lot.  I have been so  happy with the way I have been losing and am afraid that if I up my calories I will stop losing weight.  She assures me that won't happen, and warns that if I keep my calories so low for too long, my body will adjust my metabolism and make it even harder to lose weight.

What experiences have  you had?  I want to listen to her, but I'm really afraid of that many calories.  Plus, while I am still in my honeymoon stage and really have nothing going on in the  appetite stimulating hormone department, I want to take advantage and hit my goal while things are most favorable.  According to today's body scan thingie, I have 51 more pounds to go to be at the "ideal" weight.

Please share your thoughts, experiences and advice.

thanks.

My surgeon and nutritionist put me on a 100/100 protein and carb gram diet daily.  I am 5'11 1/2" currently at 263 lbs.

Suppose to get 100 grams of protein as well as 100 grams of carbs every day.  I assume that I am getting around 1200-1400 calories a day on that regimen. So I am not surprised by your dietician recommended that.  My weight has not dropped as drastically as you.  Had surgery July 1 at around 288 lbs now 263.

My surgeon, although great at the surgery part, was not very helpful with the dietary part.  Most of what my "plan" is comes from internet research.  That being said, I'm 5'10".  I shoot for 80 grams protein and less than 40 gram carbs.  I try to keep calories between 800-1000 depending on workouts.  I've noticed that anything above that I start going into maintanence mode.  My suggestion is if you are getting in at least 80-100 grams of good protein, all of your liquids, and you feel fine, there is no such thing as too few calories.

So just for giggles, I went back into myfitnesspal, and looked at what I was eating 5 months post op. Reviewing a few days, I was between 850 and 950 calories, with 80/90 gms of protein. I know that I had several days of over 1000 calories, but not that many. I had some days with as many as 100gms of carbs, but most were less. Lastly, I am not supposed to drink calories, so protein shakes etc are out for me.

Keeping in mind I'm no expert, I would eat to your comfort level. If that's 650/700 so be it. At some point, your body will tell you it needs more and you'll get hungry. Just listen to your body.

I wanted to get the weight off as quick as I could. I'm 6'3", and didn't go over 1,000 until I was at goal. I wouldn't have even considered going anywhere near 1,300.

With workouts, MyFitnessPal said that most days I had negative calories. But part of that is the wildly inflated calorie burns they give for workouts.

Being really low calorie didn't harm my metabolism. Iiweigh about 190 now, and average between 2,400 and 2,600 most days to maintain that.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.  I also spoke with a guy from my synagogue who is a gastroenterologist and nutrition specialist.  He thinks my nutritionist is giving me bad advice.  According to him, as long as I get enough protein and take my supplements, and as long as I feel good, there is absolutely no reason to up my calories.  He said if my metabolism was going to slow, its already done so.

That being said, I do at times feel a little weak and would love some things that will aid my performance in the ''oval office'' if you know what I mean.  😃  So I'm going to up my intake to 800 by adding a bit of healthy fruit.

I'm with you Grimm...I want to take it off as quickly as possible and really take advantage of the honeymoon period.

I have less than 50 to goal and I have every intention of doing it before the end of 2015.
