Howdy Gents!

I'm almost 2 months out from the RNY; I'm feeling better than I have in decades, and the scale is in the 260's for the first time since ... Gosh, 1995.

The Doc gave me the clearance at my 1 month appointment to move into soft foods, specifically chicken, fish and some salads.  The Heavens opened; the Angels sang, because I could finally get something in there that was REAL, and not a protein shake or yogurt.

So, I've been experimenting for about a month with chicken (I'm just not a seafood kinda guy...), and I've discovered that pretty much anything Chicken-related (regardless of how it's cooked & chewed or even eggs - also regardless of cooked methodology) causes lots of issues - discomfort, nausea and even downright pain.

That's never been an issue before.  Heck, I was a deviled egg fiend at bar-b-ques.  But now?  Nope.  I'm a little disappointed - I was hoping that eggs would be one of my high-protein staples, but I can't see it anymore.

Do you all have any foods that pre-surgery were fine, but post-surgery are no longer a viable choice?  I mean, we all aren't supposed to eat the "bad stuff", but I'm referring to the proteins and veggies that are supposed to be relatively good for us.

Color me frustrated, with a tint of disappointment.  I make a mean frittata... Which is essentially an omelet cooked in a pan.

Have a great day out there fellas!

Tom,

Learning what and how to eat post op is purely trial and error.  If something does not work for you make a note of it and go back a month later or so and try it again.  Chicken is very sinewy and a lot of people have a hard time with it so you are not alone.  Mention dry chicken and I have flashbacks of two bad experiences I had with the poultry.  Now I can do chicken, and eggs, w/o issue.  Single poached egg w/grated cheese is my almost daily breakfast.  Long as the eggs are not runny - I'm good.  Ham and cheese omelets are my "go to" when I'm on the road.  Leave a lot of it behind but I like them!

I also loved deviled eggs.  I could not eat eggs for the first year in any form.  As far as chicken, I still have trouble eating white meat unless I chew it into mush, not to tasty when you do that.  Anyway, I am 1-1/2 years out and I can tolerated 1 deviled egg with no problem.  I can eat chicken thighs, no problem but no skins.  White meat does not even appeal to me anymore....don't touch it.  I have trouble with white potatoes, but can handle sweet potatoes.  For the most part, I can eat just about anything else this far out, but just in small amounts.  Fatty meats, port ribs, spare ribs and so on just me me sick.  As far as veggies, under cooked green beans and under cooked broccoli bother me.  It does get better, good luck!

Definitely give it some time.  You're still really early out, and things may change.  When I was cleared for a full diet, one of the first things I tried was a hard boiled egg, and it was misery.  By 6 months out, I could eat them fine.  As Don said, it's a lot of trial and error.  You may have to give up eggs and chicken for now, but try again later in a few weeks.

I couldn't eat checken breast or normal pork for 8 months after surgery. Even now at about 15 months, chicken breast has to be perfectly cooked (read moist) for me to get it down.

I've become a big fan of boneless, skinless chicken thighs. They stay much more moist and are much easier to get down.
