150 lost and maintaining!

I had a VSG in the end of November last year. Started at 333 current weight is 257. Problem is I have only lost 2 lbs since March 1. Its's getting frustrating. Has anyone else had this problem? I still need to lose 50 more pounds at least.

Welcome @Cal5. Its tough to say how much any individual should be losing since there are so many variables. Being captain obvious here...

1) Are you logging all your food - and not cheating!!

2) Are you getting all your water in?

3) Are you working out? If so, do you have a good balance of cardio and strength?

4) Are you limiting your carbs, and most importantly your simple carbs?

Make sure you're following your plan to the letter, drink water and workout. You'll get past that plateau.

One thing to remember is that as you lose weight, your body requires fewer calories at rest which means that even if you're still eating lower calories, you'll lose weight more slowely. I'm no nutritionist, but my belief is that its important to do some strength training to build muscle which burns more calories at rest than fat, so that its easier to maintain your weight loss, or lose those last few pounds.

Thanks for checking in. This is a great place to be accountable to yourself for how you did the previous week. Let us know how you're doing.

@John, don’t despair - you’ve got this!

@Nate, CONGRATS!

@Ohiodietguy, GREAT start!

@Eric, great progress!  Biking is great exercise and a good way to break the monotony of the gym.

@Cal5, plateaus can last 4-6 weeks.  @John has great advise for breaking them.  Also, though you haven’t lost lbs have you noticed any redistribution?  i.e. lost inches?  Also, being 5 months out it’s easy to not get enough calories which puts your body into starvation mode trying to hold on to as much fat as possible.  Log your food and make sure you’re getting at least 1000 calories per day of good quality food with at least 70 gms protein.

    My stats this week:

           High weight:  392.0 lbs
Pre-op Weight 4 Aug 09:  377.5 lbs
      1st Surgiversary:  241.0 lbs
      2nd Surgiversary:  212.5 lbs
      3rd Surgiversary:  217.0 lbs
      4th Surgiversary:  214.0 lbs
      5th Surgiversary:  223.0 lbs
             Last week:  222.8 lbs / 19.8% body fat / 169.8 lbs muscle mass
             This week:  224.2 lbs / 21.2% body fat / 168.2 lbs muscle mass

I’m up another 1.4 lbs overall this week but down 1.6 lbs muscle mass.  Being on the road I made it to the hotel fitness center 3 days this past week for cardio but no strength training.  I also didn’t do too well mindfully eating either and the numbers show it.  Hopefully, being back in my normal routine this week will improve the numbers next week.

Be safe & have a great week gentlemen!

-Mike

I appreciate the info. My surgeon recommends waiting to do weights until after I hit goal but I have been thinking of starting that up. I am just doing cardio right now I have never been told to write down what I eat. Just lean dense protein with low carb vegetables. I do drink all water that they recommend. Anyway thank for all the feedback.

Try using myfitnesspal. You can use the website, or better yet the app.

Like I said, all surgeons are different. I was able to start any activity about three weeks after surgery. I started working out with a personal trainer after about 10 weeks.

I second using MyFitnessPal.  It works really well (and it's free!).

I started with just cardio, and after about a month and a half, I switched to a combination of the two.  I was going to do it like your doctor recommended, and wait until after losing all my weight to do weight training, but I'm glad I didn't.  You burn good calories during and after weight training.  It's probably best to combine the two, but I have to admit, I don't to much cardio right now.  Ultimately, the best exercise is whatever you'll do and stick with.

High Weight: 380

Starting Weight: 350

Last Week: 225.3

Current Weight: 220.3

I did not expect a drop like this!  I haven't been to the gym since Friday, April 10th, because of work and this horrible cold that I'm just now getting over.  But I know there were some days that I haven't eaten much at all.  I'm finally feeling almost normal today, but due to my work schedule, I won't be able to go back to the gym until Friday.  That'll make 2 weeks without working out - the longest that I have been without since recovering from surgery.  I'm glad that I still lost so much this week, but I don't want to lose my strength gains.
