Alcohol
I had VSG and do occasionally enjoy a whiskey on the rocks. It is low cal, I don't mix it with anything to add calories, and it is something to sip on when your at a social event. A friend posted this article about whiskey on FB but I'm not sure about how valid the claims are.

My 2 cents...8 years out...RNY. Ditto on what has been said. Quote from the WLS support group nurse; "post WLS people are about 30% more likely to become alcoholics than the average person". Take it for what it's worth. You also really need to look at transfer addiction. They are taking away your baby blanket-pacifier FOOD!! Not saying you will go this route, but many WLS people transfer from one addiction to another...It doesn't have to be alcohol either. Some go into sex addiction, some exercise, some shopping. Just saying be aware. I have about an oz of wine about once a month. I will get a buzz off just that one oz. One thing that people haven't mentioned that you may find out...Your taste buds change. You will become more sensitive to smells. Fat in food will taste different. For me the one difference I noticed was the taste of bitterness. I became very sensitive to it. I would have a beer now and then before surgery. But now post op, I really can taste the bitterness in the beer. The same goes for coffee. 95% of the coffees I don't like...Because of the bitter taste. You will know what I'm talking about when you get there. Ditto on empty calories. I didn't touch sugar for 1 year post op...Wish I never went back to it. After a year or two I was back to Pepsi and chips!!?@%$ What was I thinking. I was doing this for my health...I regained 40 pounds and had a second heart attack. That woke me up fast. I'm a lot more careful in what I eat. Still eat junk, but I mix in really healthy food with it. I do my penance for my bad eating by riding the bicycle or walking. Good luck on your journey. Eyes wide open. Brian
Dave:
You must not have any alchohol for at least 18 months. The reason is because you will risk ulcers and bleeding around the anastomos. You also will become sensitive to alcohol because it will enter your system much faster. One beer is like a 6-pack. If you overdrink - you can damage the liver. So, please be mindful.
I started drinking again some 3 months ago. Booze of any kind hits me 10X as hard and faster. After 2 stiff rum and cokes on an empty stomach and I fell on the floor and could not get up. 4 or 5 beers and I have to find the bed and pass out.
This week I went to the ER with what turned out to be gallbladder pain...I hope. They did blood labs and found my liver function numbers are real high. 4 months ago and before they were normal. Alcohol is suspected. I will have more blood labs in 2 weeks.
Good luck to you.

I certainly hope it's not cirrhosis. I'm getting an Elastograph (MRI+Sonogram) in a couple of weeks to see how my liver is faring. Slightly different topic, but it appears that all of the bypass surgeries are a risk factor in liver disease, according to the very last section here: http://www.healthcommunities.com/liver-disease/causes.shtml
