Howdy Gents,
I hope today finds everyone happy and healthy. Here in the east the rain has stopped, today is sunny and temps will be 75-80... the type of day we live for and I am loving it.
Happy to report my back slide is over and my back side is once again on the program. Made it to the gym 6 of the last 7 days, got my food intake much closer to where it is supposed to be and cut my caffeinated coffee back to one cup a day. It all added up to a 4 lb loss for the week which I am extremely pleased about.
I am now back to the interesting paradox that the more fit we get, the harder it is to stay fit... seems unfair to me and I find that between the accelerated exercise needed to keep the weight off and the reward/ punishment system going on in my brain that it is very hard to reach a comfortable balance! I haven't done the math but the workout time needed to match the 5600 or so calories burned this past week at approx. 183 lbs will be quite different than that needed at 179 lbs, am I right? I also go through the deal where I did really great this week so as a reward I slack the next and end up worse off! Total mindf**k! How do you guys work it?
Also a bit of advise for the noobs or anyone else that likes the coffee... caffeine plugs you up! I was always told by my NUT that it was bad because it dehydrates, I had always experienced the stimulant side of it that gets the pipes moving... NOT the case after surgery! To the point of pain, discomfort, and bloodshed! So, little or no caffeine! (how's that for a little man to man!?)
Ken, I hope you are doing better!
Don, I hope the honeymoon is still going strong!
Everyone else, stay the course and I'll see you next Sunday!
Brian

It's been a week of healing for me. I'm already at the point where I am just frustrated that I have no more stamina than I currently do. I want to go and do ... just for the sake of going and doing. I've quickly grown bored with staying at the house unable to lift much due to the open surgery.
I am, however, finding every aspect of this recovery easier than the first, although the first was lap. Perhaps it's that I better understand what is happening or perhaps the 200 pound previous weight loss is making it easier. I am also less afraid I can screw something up. In fact, although I wouldn't mind losing a few pounds, I'm actually not at all worried about the weight loss this time.
Oh, and the surgeon this go round is much easier on meds after surgery. I am not ruining my delicious liquid diet with crushed vitamins and pills. He permits pills, so I don't have that miserable task at mealtime.
Oh, and as for being plugged up, the magic formula for me has been 3 Colace and a shot of Miralax daily. It's worked like a charm for at least two years with or without coffee. The Miralax dissolves into any liquid without a real discernible flavor, although I can taste it in water. I dump it in a cup of coffee each afternoon. How's that for poetic justice?
Have a good week, guys.
RNY 5/17/10 highest: 407 lb - maintaining a loss of 200+ pounds and enjoying life
The Numbers:
346: All time high 7/1/10 - BMI = 52
326: Tufts Medical Center, Surgery 12/27/10 BMI=49
196: Weigh In 6/2/13
196: This Week 6/9/13 -->No Gain/Loss BMI=29
150:Total Weight Loss
So, looks like a status quo week. I am good with that overall. Again, my major goal is to stay at 196 or under on a weekly basis. Doing my best to adhere to the basics of 64 oz of water, Food Journaling, and consistent exercise. So overall a good week.
One key for me is I was able to get back to running. THis week I ran a total of 25 miles over 5 different days, so pretty happy with that.
Have a great week!!
Yours in WLS Journey,
Bill Mac
@Brian, good job! You bet the fit paradox seems unfair. It’s like when everything is great, the only thing that can happen is going downhill. BUT, the quality of life that fitness gives far outweighs the hassle. It’s definitely a mind-game. Focus on the positive and keep vigilant. On the coffee front, I grind my own decaf beans and drink about 96 oz per day. Pretty good tasting without the ill effects of caffeine.
@Ken, great news on your recovery! Definitely need to not push too hard with open surgery. You want all of that abdominal muscle to heal properly so as not to get a hernia. The stamina will return with time – slow and steady is the word.
@Bill Mac, excellent! Keep it up.
My stats this week:
High weight: 392 lbs
Pre-op Weight 4-Aug-09: 377.5 lbs
Last week: 218.8 lbs / 21.1% body fat / 164.2 lbs muscle mass
This week: 217.2 lbs / 20.5% body fat / 164.2 lbs muscle mass
My overall weight is down another 1.6 lbs this week with muscle mass status quo. I redoubled my efforts to get the recommended protein (115g protein per day) based on my activity level (1100-1200 kcal per 60 minute cardio workout). I made it to the gym on 5 days this past week and spent yesterday prepping and painting windows. Stayed on the plan with higher protein, lower fat, lower carb foods. The numbers show the results.
Now, just to be able to prioritize my life this next week to do the same. My work schedule this week is going to make that a challenge. We’ll see.
Be safe & have a great week gentlemen!
-Mike

Way too many carbs, and way too much "road kill", the last several days. Have to get back on the straight and narrow now that the hoopla is said and done. Dreading going back to work after being off a few days.
Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!
Whoa! I did not know it was a white wedding? Or perhaps you are out to test his memory! ;-)

Overall plan seems to be going well. Very flat loss this week. Went to a wedding Saturday which totally blew my week. Ended up doing a lot of work the first 5 days and then taking Sat & Sun off. So back on schedule today.
