weight
Ok Ima getting kinda discouraged on the weight I am not losing... I only get at the most 450 to 500 cals a day and 50 to 60 grams of protein a day. I read someones post about similiar prob, but with sleeve.. they were told to pick up on their cal intake and they started losing... all kinda confusing to me. I had surgery on 5/13 it is 5/28 I was 280 5 days pre-op appt and I am 257 now.. Any helpful advise would be great, thank you
Rob
While I do agree with Don, be patient, I am interested in your calorie intake being that low. I had my RNY on 3/26 and I'm pretty sure that I'm up around 1000 calories although I do not actually count mine. I know that I still have 2 protein shakes a day made with 1% milk so that's around 500 calories just in those two shakes. I am supposed to try and get 105g of protein per day. I don't know if I make it to that point or not, but I should be close.
I eat 3 meals a day and at this point I'm eating just about whatever my stomach can tolerate that is high(er) in protein and low(er) in carbs, especially sugar. I can generally eat about 4oz. of a protein meat for each meal along with 1-2oz. of a veggie and/or fruit. Depending on the protein and how my stomach feels, I may or may not get all of that down; generally I can though. I know everyone is different but you may (very general may) want to check with a nutritionist on the amount of calories you are getting. If you don't have a nutritionist, you may try bumping up the calories slowly but moreso just to get in more protein. I sent my nutritionist packing after my second (mandatory) visit, this particular one in the surgeon's office was worthless in my opinion. I was charged my copay which is $40 and they billed my insurance for several hundred each visit which the insurance paid ZERO. They have yet to bill me the balance and I don't know that they will, but I'm not taking any chances. I got enough information in my initial packets to give me an idea on the foods to eat up until this point and there was never any mention of how many calories so I assumed that was less important.
Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way, but I'm doing what I feel is the right thing by focusing on protein with fewer carbs and trying to make sure any carbs I do get are "good" carbs. So as long as I keep a trend of losing weight I will assume I am doing the right thing. There will be weeks for you and me where we don't lose anything and possibly even gain, and I'm ready for that to happen. I know if I am doing the right things and I stall or gain a little, that it's just my body. If I go 2 or 3 weeks where I don't lose or maybe gain it's time to take a really hard look at what I'm doing. From what I hear, that can still happen. During all of my dieting years I have been told that eating too few calories can cause the body to go into a "starvation" mode where your body starts storing fat and you stop losing weight. To a certain point, it does make sense to increase calories to keep losing weight.
I hope this helps.

Ok, you went from 280 to 257, loss of twenty three pounds between 5/8 and 5/28, 20 days. Averaging over 1 pound per day...
Rob you are kicking BUTT and psyching yourself out!!!
If you keep losing 20 pounds a MONTH you are golden / on the fast track and that would be a slow down from where you are currently.
So if anything I expect your weight loss to slow up some.
Slow and Steady wins this race. If you hit a stall (2 to 3 weeks), pay attention to your measurements, they usually go down while the weight stays the same.
You GOT this my friend!
Man!! What was I looking at? I had the dates all messed up when I replied. That was a huge oversight on my part. I'm glad you decided to post!

My bad Rob, I must have been responding to too many posts the day I replied to yours. For some reason I had my date and your date all messed up in my head. I was thinking you had surgery on 3/13. Sam is right man, you are only 15 days out between your measurements and lost 23 pounds!! Wow, that's pretty damn good and skip what I said about the calories while you're at it. Like I said, I had the dates all messed up for some reason. Sorry about that.

A pause or stall within the first 2-3 weeks of any major weight loss effort is quite normal - here is a good article that describes what's going on now:
http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.html
The other bit of relevant news is that once you start losing again, it will be at a somewhat lower rate than your first couple of weeks. As Diana notes in her article, your initial loss is mostly glycogen, which is fairly fast burning (it only takes about 2000 calories to burn off a pound at this stage, but after your body gets the idea that you are serious about this caloric deficit thing and starts to actually burn the fat that you want to get rid of, that fat burn slower, so it will take around 3500 calories to burn off a pound, but at least you will be doing what you came her to do - burn off the fat!
So, stick with it and you will be back on the loser's bench in no time.
