Anybody else not getting sick since RNY?

Hey Guys,

Just wondering...since I haven't gotten a single cold or virus since RNY about 6 years ago (now 51)...wondering if anyone else had had this?

I read that we get a complete change in intestinal bacteria and I know in some cases, this can boost the immune system. Not sure if this could be the connection, if it's just me, or what.

Still at the same thin weight and still super active.

Hope You are Well,

Dave

Just realized I'm just over a month from 7 years out. Hey, I guess all of my original cells have just about replaced themselves.

Interesting theory.

Funny you bring this up... My wife just got over a 2 week bout with the flu... hit her hard. Me, 2 days of the sniffles... that's it. Other than that no worries and I will be coming around to 1 year out soon.

I also think it has to do with the supplements we have to take... I am oooozing with excess vitamins out of every pore, and I think it has made my overall health much better.

Interesting theory.  Of course, all of the things the medical community has been preaching for years - eat better, daily exercise, better nutrition, more water, better sleep, etc. - are typically the habits that we try to live by now.  So, no wonder our immune systems are bolstered.

Thanks, Guys. I was a fat guy who exercised, but still caught colds from time-to-time, usually nothing too worrisome, but fevers, sore throats, stopped-up nose and the like. Now, it's just nothing. I ate vegetables along with the high food intake, took vitamins and all.

I think the time when I got the most mild colds was when I lost big weight pre-WLS (in my early 30's). Which is why now at 51, no colds seems odd.

Best Wishes,

Dave

Hi Guys,

Great thread...and so interesting as I was recently thinking bout this. This cold/flu/stomach bug season has been the worse I can remember. Still, knock on wood I have not gotten anything of note. Still, I think it has more to do w/ what Mike R had said that maybe it is being healthier overall! In any event, happy I have not been sick!

Best,
Bill Mac

Hi Bill,

Yes, I think there is something to it. All kinds of hormonal changes occur, starting with insulin and ghrelin. And certain probiotics have been show to boost immunity, so the complete change in gut hormones that comes from RNY could do it.

Best Wishes,

Dave

Sorry, meant "gut bacteria." But I guess ghrelin is a gut hormone (?). Not sure. Maybe a peptide, but I don't know exactly what that is, lol.
