Sunday Morning Weigh-In, lets talk exercise edition

Weight at initial consult 1-19-2012: 269

I want to start by welcoming all the new faces we have been seeing. Please post some questions or advice, we are a friendly mellow group. No drama here, just support and fellowship. Tell all your male friends from other groups and forums to come-on by. This right here is the Sunday Morning Weigh-In where we check in with our buds and get some accountability and support if we need it. Have a post here this morning and let us know where you are at.
Back up a pound this week. I seem to be hovering around 174/ 175. Like I said before, if this is my new "normal" I will be happy. Made some major changes to my gym routine this week. I had been doing treadmill for an hour and burning 4-500 calories a visit, 0-3 times a week. I have now graduated to a machine called an "Arc Trainer" which has a "running like" motion but smooth arcs... not nearly as hard on the ankles, knees and hips as the treadmill. I made it in 5 times this week and burn 350-400 calories in 32 minutes on this new machine. I also added in weight training for my upper body, machines not free weights. I am hoping the weight shift is more muscle mass and less fat... Might need to get one of those fancy calculator scales soon.
I am going to visit the exercise board but wanted some opinions from you guys on what you do for exercise. I know there are many runners here, it is not for me... ankles and knees scream after a few minutes and my legs turn to lead. What do you do in the gym, how do you add muscle mass to your upper body, what activity do you use to straight up burn calories? My lower body has stayed muscular and has improved thanks to all the treadmill activities, I am lucky and have no loose skin on my legs even though they are much slimmer.

My only regular exercise is walking. No running. Knees can't take it. Usually two miles on open road with a few hills. Too far to go to any type of gym on a regular basis. The free weights I bought to use at home are gathering rust on the front porch. Put them out there when we put new floors down and they never came back inside. Need to set up fiance's treadmill to use when it is too bad to walk outside.

I'm operating within my parameters- 165-170 seems to be the parameter window my body has chosen. I'm not anticipating any major regain or dramatic loss anytime soon. My intake is protein forward about 95% of the time and involuntary restriction and food tolerance (or lack thereof) is keeping things in check.
As far as the exercise is concerned, I am out the door after this post to pick up my bib # for the half-marathon I am participating in at noon (e.s.t). I am a little apprehensive about the weather (it's downpouring out right now) but I will grind it out nonetheless. A half marathon is 13.1 miles and I expect to finish in around 2 hours and 20 minutes, based on my pace from similar run lengths. I also expect to be pretty sore tonight and some of tomorrow. A good sore....
Once I realized that my legs were not going to fall off or I would have to climb into an ambulance after running, it has become my cardio exercise of choice. I typically do 5 to 10 miles every third day and mix up the distance and course to keep it interesting. For the first mile I could easily just stop and turn around. That's actually the hardest mile. Miles two to three my shins start to ache. Miles three to five the shins feel better and the quads tighten up. After 5 miles my body seems to swich into auto-pilot, and then the distance after that will determine how sore I will be when I'm done. The furthest I have run to date is 11 1/2 miles, about two weeks ago, so today should be interesting. Wish me luck - I'll keep ya posted!

Attaboy Tim! Go Gettum! Steadily raining here north of you too, you should look like a drowned cat by the time you are through... in a good way. :-) Me, I am taking a day of rest.

The entire country must be soggy. We had a rainy day yesterday, not one of those famous Texas downpours, but a medium to light all day affair. It's supposed to clear up after noon today and get a bit cooler. We may even get to see the 60s on an especially cool morning. Isn't Texas weather pleasant?
Exercise routine for me is actually pretty boring. I have to admit that I still hate exercise for the sake of exercising. Weights bore me beyond belief. And the knees are shot after 50+years of carrying around all that weight. So, I walk. If the weather requires the gym, I do the treadmill, but of the weather is nice I'd rather walk outside now that I don't sweat like a pig just going out. Typically, I walk everyday at lunch somewhere near my office, parking lots, sidewalks, malls, whatever is close. I do have a bike that I ride a bit at home, although I'm not in a great biking area as far as safety is concerned. I also try to do stairs when possible. But, even with all the unrequired parking lot walking at lunch, be warned that I'll still run your ass over if you try to take the good parking space from me at Walmart. Just sayin'.
