Dan,
The recommendations differ depending on the different types of surgery.
The range of no supplementation necessary with the Lap-Band to lots of dire needs for the DS surgery.
There needs to be recommendations from your surgeon that you take VERY seriously, and keep your radar screen up in the forum specific to your surgery type. Do what your doctor says, but don't be afraid to ask questions if you read something that seems to have some traction on the forums.
Look, there are some real idiots on the Internet, and I wouldn't take a solid recommendation from any of them point blank. After you lurk or participate on a forum for a while you get an idea of who is a straight shooter and who is full of it.
Use what they say to influence the conversations that you have with your surgeon. Trust him/her or get a new one. There should be no in between.
Now as far as vitamin supplementation goes, I have some personal opinions that waver from the main stream medical community, but not by much.
The RDA (or recommended Daily allowance that you see on the side of every vitamin pill bottle tells us what it takes to prevent vitamin deficiency disease. For instance, the RDA recommendation that we get 60mg of Vitamin C a day is the amount needed to prevent scurvy.
OK?
There is no solid research to prove what amount of Vitamin C provides Maximal Health.
( Linus Pauling did a lot of work on this, but got very sketchy in his later years)
So what I'm saying is that my doctor says that I don't need a vitamin supplement, but I take two Centrum every day, along with 500mg vitamin C and 1200mg of Omega 3 Fatty Acids.
There is very little hard core evidence to prove that this is the correct dose. There is soft evidence that these things make a difference, and they only cost me a few dimes a day. Actually most doctors wouldn't go out of their way to disagree with me.
So that's what I do.
Am I full of it?
Possibly.
just my two cents

You may want to take a look at recommendations from the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons website for recommendations for the various surgeries:
http://s3.amazonaws.com/publicASMBS/GuidelinesStatements/Guidelines/bgs_final.pdf
(their website is asmbs.org)
You will have to weigh these recommendations against what your surgeon and/or PCP suggest. From personal experience, I can tell you that some surgeons do not suggest any or all of the supplements and some do not require all of the lab work recommended by ASMBS. My PCP orders lab work per the ASMBS recommendations since my surgeon doesn't order everything and I think it's a good idea to have it done.
It's my feeling that you need to learn as much as possible and advocate for yourself rather than blindly following anyone's direction (that includes both doctors and internet forum posters).

I take a b12 sublingual, if you have had RNY you have lost the intrinsic factor to absorb b12 so it has to be supplemented in some form. If not, overtime it can become very dangerous and create anemia issues. I take a multivitamen, and a calcium with vit d supplement all chewables not gummies. Other than that I am good to go for now. I would concur scheduled blood analysis is the only way to be sure and should be part of your program.
