Hi: Guy's  A question for all to think about.
Last week when I attended the WLS meeting, I met a guy who had VSG three months ago. He told the group that he's wife complaints that she can smell his surgery. I did not know or understood what she meant by that, but I did hear it before from someone else. Does anyone have any information on this topic or ever heard of it ? It bothers him so, that he is constantly taking showers, using tons of deodorant and Cologne. The gentlemen appeared to be well groomed, i did not detach any odors coming from him.
Is it possible that when the surgeon cuts to free the stomach the smoke coming off the blade is trapped in the stomach cavity and that is what she is smelling ?
I have no idea what it can be or where to go for more information., Help !!!!!!!!!

Most WLS patients will go into ketosis...Your urine is strong smelling (and dark yellow) and you breath smells like lighter fluid!!  Because it is...Acetone.

Ketosis is a condition in which levels of ketones (ketone bodies) in the blood are elevated. Ketones are formed when glycogen stores in the liver have run out. The ketones are used for energy. Ketones are small carbon fragments that are the fuel created by the breakdown of fat stores. Ketosis is potentially a serious condition if keytone levels go too high.

However, when the body is in ketosis the individual tends to feel less hungry, and will probably eat less than he/she might otherwise do. The body switches from being a carbohydrate-burning organism into a fat-burning one. The fat stores become a primary energy source, and the person loses weight. That is why low-carb diets have become popular, and effective, especially among obese people.

If glucose cannot be broken down, as may be the case if the insulin levels are too low, or if there is a lack of glucose, then the body has to break down stored fat and convert it into energy. Metabolizing fat raises blood ketone levels, leading to ketosis. Ketosis can occur with Type 1 diabetes (not enough insulin), alcoholism, starvation, and with a low-carb, high fat/protein diet.

Ketones consist of acetone, acetoacetate or beta-hydroxybutyrate. Very high ketone levels can be toxic, making the blood more acid, and may damage such organs as the kidneys and liver.

The human body tries to lower acetone (a ketone) levels by breathing it out, causing a sweet and fruity breath. We also reduce keytone levels by expelling them through our urine.

Hi: Guy's
All of you answers were great. Cabin 111 your explanation was was right on the money. I have been on many diets and know about Ketones, but have never experienced any odors or smells myself. After surgery if you start going into Ketosis, will it clear-up after getting to goal or will you always be the Stinky one in the room.

Last week I shared my Bucket List on this site, one items on the list was that I want to fall in love again, but if surgery is going to cause me to smell, my chances of meeting someone would be zero, if I STINK.

I consider myself to be a very clean man, my motto in that area is, " Looking good, Smelling good and Feeling good, I would hate for that to change.

Hey, Don you always come up with some good ones, Thanks.

To all, have a healthy, safe and Blessed week.

Here's Farting at you kid. ( Casa Blanca )

Beyond Brian's explanation of ketosis I was going to toss out that he might have the "winds" and is a walking perpetual flatuation machine!

Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!

I know my wife smells the results of my surgery daily infact some days the whole house smells of my surgery LOL.

Another thing is that Our fat cells store a lot of things so say someone who was an acholic when many years ago when the were morbidly obese has surgery as the fat is burned the alcohol would be released and if they sweat would be released in their sweat which can produce very stong body odors.  Of course this is an example of just one thing but holds true for numerous other things we have taken into our bodies througout out life.

Another common odor produced by some of us is Ammonia. If you maintain an ultra low carb diet, like what post op protocol doesn't, and you do intense cardio your body will burn convert protein for fuel and the result is your sweat smells like ammonia.  My wife will not come near me after I do a long run or a cardio session at the gym.

I have heard of this occuring with DS surgery.  My brothers girlrfriend hangs out with a group of gals and one of them had the DS and she has an ordor about her.  I spoke with one of my surgeons and the nutritionist and both have said it has been a reported issue in DS especially if a lot of fatty foods are consumed however it is not an issue for everyone.
