Random Whining and a few Questions

Well I am finally able to get back to my computer, as I have felt very crummy the last 3-4 days. I have been very tired and seem to lack the energy to move about. Today, however, I am a little stronger and feel like I am turning a corner. After the ease of my operation and the way I felt 1 day post op, I was ready to rock and roll. Instead I was barley able to just roll.  BTW I experienced my first dumping episode trying to eat some string cheese. Boy was that fun !

Question: My meds from before surgery, do I need to crush them up or just take them whole.?  I have a ton of them and some are like horse pills.

Question: Have you guys still felt hungry after your 2oz of food per meal?  I sure don't want to overdue it, but my guidelines say that's all for the first 6 mos.

Daniel,
First what you are feeling is actually pretty normal. It really does take a bit to get to a more normal level of activity. I took about 10 days off work and then work half days for about another 2 weeks. So, just be patient and rest.

As for your food plan...it's much different than mine was. I was allowed nothing even close to solid or mushy for several weeks, then for several more I was on mashed potato consistancy things. Cheese was well over a month out. So, it appears that yourmdoctor's meal plan is much faster getting on solids than mine was.

As for the hunger after your two oz servings. You are likely experiencing head hunger since most RNY patients (me included) feel no real hunger for quite a while since those nerves are severed. In fact, I really had to force the food for a while. I had no real feelings of hunger or being full for probably six months. I still have a limited sense of hunger, although I still know when it's mealtime. The feeling, though, is different. Same for fullness, the feeling is different and Imhad to learn to interpret my body's new signs. For example, my full signal is my nose...running means I'm full. If I don't stop then I get uncomfortable,

Good luck and be sure to keep us posted about your progress.

One idea since you are sip sip sipping away...And no, this in not approved by your doctor, but is minor and could help.  Get some frozen spinach...Put it in the microwave and add a small amount of iodized salt.  See if that perks you up.  The spinach has potassium and iron.  Since you are peeing away all your liquids consider the small amount of salt for sodium in your system.  Or when no one is looking, grab some Gerber's baby food...spinach.  See if that helps.  The energy will come back...But it takes a while.  Brian

Hey one trick I found is DON'T use large plates. !!! I used monkey dishes and small saucer. It tricks your post mind. Don't eat in front of the TV.and I to had liquid diet for 30the days and then slowly got into solids ... tomato soup a little sweet basil. And a dash of hot sauce. And refried beans . And a little salsa maybe a dash of low fat sour cream ... I lived on things like that. Ohyea humus. And roster red bell peppers... .head hunger is hard to get to know what it is and I took the 6tires months to reteach myself how to eat healthier and portion size that is essential! !! And to the part about no ambition they told me in the hospital the faster I get out if bed the faster I would recover.some days its had but you HAVE to Move your feet to lose anything this surgery is just a tool. Well good luck.get tough and I get out and start living. I'm 6not years post op and been at my goal weight for 5the years.175 from 360. You can do it if you fallow direction and learn how to Move your feet ......

Congratulations on beginning your journey.  As others have said, keep taking it slowly and don't be surprised if you don't get really going until 4-5 weeks out.  It will come...

As for your meds, I'd invest in a pill splitter and cut them up into 1/4's or 1/8's depending on how big the pills truly are.  You probably don't want anything bigger than a little saccharin sized tablet (small).

As for feeling full, you need to really work on Mindful Eating.  Following these rules:
1. No liquid 30 minutes before or after your meal.
2. Small bites - Chew each bite at least 30 times until it is the consistancy of mush.
3. Put your fork/spoon down between bites.
4. Don't eat in front of the TV.
5. Your meal should take you 20 -30 minutes to eat if eaten mindfully.

I bet if you follow these steps that you'll find that you are not hungry after your 2 oz of food.

Good Luck!!
