Travis,

It is pretty normal to be aprehensive before surgery, but realize the result of having a valuable tool for weight control after surgery is more than worth it.  Notice I said "tool" not "quick fix".  You will still have a lot of work to do with adhering to your diet and getting moving - I know because I am currently struggling with having the energy to exercise at one month postop but it gets better everyday.  For me, I find that knowledge is power in facing uncertainty.  I re-read ALL of the materials I got from the surgeon and hospital several times in the two weeks before surgery so that I became more comfortable with what things will be like postop.  Reading old posts on the mens forum can also be very helpful, though I would stay away from the estrogen ocean of the general forum and the drama contained therein (my opinion).  If this approach or other advice you get on this forum are not enough, then you may want to contact the psychologist who did your screening for advice on whether to seek medical support for the anxiety.  Probably spending an hour talking it out with the psychologist will be supportive and helpful.

Best of luck,
Roger

I felt that distraction helped the most.
Stay busy. Exercise if you can.
Prayer and meditation.
get stocked up.
Make sure you have protein you can tolerate, and the first few foods.
Gas-ex strips and liquid Tylenol came in handy for me.
1/2 cup measuring cups and small Tupperware.
Throw away the snacks, and pop, and a new family rule against them.
Talk to these guys here. There's strength in numbers.

Any way good luck. The days will fly by before you know it and you will soon officially be a loser.

Def agree with both these guys! Prepare prepare and prepare.....the mental prep is the hardest and the most important. Reading and researching to find out what to expect was my salvation. It keep me going, but stay away from horror stories from some people. Theres always a nay sayer in the crowd but I for one can you tell its the BEST decision I EVER made!
Keep a smile on your face....it makes people wonder what you are up to!

Don't over buy, things that taste good now, may not take good to you post op.  It might be best to get a few things and have someone who can go shopping for you.

I was on clear liquids for a while post op.  jello, popsicles, diet juices, crystal light broth.  When you progress to full liquids, pudding, yogurt etc.  Just make sure all are sugar free.  In the begining you will get full on two sips of water.

At the hospital, I brought chap stick, a hat, shorts, slip on shoes, family picture, cell phone.  brought a book and ipod and did not use.

good luck.

Jim

Just a warning, I think it is not unusual to get to some point during the first few weeks when you think  "WTF have I done to myself, is this the biggest mistake in my life?"  For me it only lasted a few minutes  and my only regret is that I did not do this a long time ago.

Little apprhension is well within the norm.

Best advice is:

Sip, sip, sip.
Walk, walk, walk.
Any problems call your doctor and above all else............

Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!

For me the only way I could deal with the massive changes this surgery would bring to my life was to not think about it.  I ate protein forward and walked  4 miles daily other than that I didn't think about it.  For me the reality is know matter what I tried to do I knew that until it happened you wouldn't fully know what it is like.

Don't sweat it and relax.  Many have gone before you and many will follow in your steps.  ollow your plan and enjoy life!
