So, I've lurked here a few weeks and read a lot of older posts, it has been very helpful.  By comparison I would be considered a "lightweight" with a BMI of 37.  However, when you factor in diabetes which has really been kicking my butt with sleep apnea and high cholesterol, I clearly needed to take action.  I had a VSG on 1/3/12 in Nashville, TN with Dr. Hugh Houston and the postop course has been very pain free and uneventful.  It is good to be on the loser's bench!

The usual stats are:
HW  before Byetta 9/2009                       293
Clear liquid start weight on 1/1/12           280
Surgery weight  1/3/12                             275
Today                                                       252

I have discontinued 3 of 4 diabetes meds and my long acting insulin is about 50% of preop levels.  I look forward to continuing with you.

Roger,

Welcome to the men's board. You're off to a great start. Be sure to monitor sugar closely as your body will change quickly. I can tell you from experience that the need for diabetes meds changes rapidly and you can end up with low blood sugar issues easily. So, stay tight with the doctors on this issue. In my case, it became an issue when the surgeon would not adjust my meds since he had not prescribed them and my PCP didn't want to interfere with anything the surgeon had done until I stabilized.

Ken,

Thanks for the heads up.  I have been fortunate that they are letting me adjust insulin on the basis of daily fasting numbers. It does take a lot of watching.  Very exciting to have the dose coming down!

Roger,
I understand the excitement of watching the dosage shrink. I was on 135 units of insulin plus 3 additional sugar pills daily. But, they're al history now.
