Do men who have had RNY take iron?

Do any of you guys who have had RNY bypass take an iron supplement? It is on the list of required supplements from my surgeon's office. However, I have been reviewing the recommendations from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and it says the 36mg of iron you typically get from two multivitamins is customary for men and postmenopausal women. I have confirmed that the multivitamin I am going to use post-surgery does provide 36mg iron. I'm trying to figure out if I should look for an additional iron supplement.
My multivitamin has iron in it as well, other then that my doc said I'll only need to take additional iron if my labs are low.
“Victory is won not in miles but in inches. Win a little now, hold your ground, and later, win a little more.? Louis L'Amour quote
I echo what Matt said that if your labs come back low (typically 3 months after surgery) then you may need to take a supplement. I have been taking a supplement since surgery since my iron was low pre-surgery. My last set of labs came back perfect with the supplement. Important thing is to faithfully take all of your vitamins and spaced out appropriately. ie Calcium not with Iron/mulivitamin and spaced throughout the day.

Thanks for all the input. I've never been low, so I think I'll just stick to the iron in the multivitamin and let my lab results going forward tell me if I need any additional supplementation. Surgery is in one week. It's hard to think about much else. I'll be glad when it's all over and I can start working to establish a new "normal." See you in the Sunday weigh-ins!
