Happy New Year! What a wild wonderful year 2011 was. It is amazing how far I've come since this time last year and I want to thank each and every person reading this for their support as it has made the trip that much easier. And to top it off, I had my biggest weight loss this past week in months. 7.8 pounds!! Where the heck did that come from? I thought my scale was broken!! I don't know what happened as I was very busy all week. I have increased my running distances but didn't really do anything else. And I am finally under a 40 BMI. Not sure exactly what that symbolizes but it feels good!!
Here is a list of some of the things that I have accomplished over the past year that I once thought were impossible (in no particular order):
1. I can RUN and do on a regular basis.
2. I can fit in any booth at a restaurant and no longer have booth phobia.
3. I can buy clothes at regular people's clothes store off of the rack.
4. I can walk up the 4 flights of stairs at work without feeling like I was going to die.
5. I can go to Boston Garden & Gillette Stadium, Dunk Center (or any arena) and fit in a seat.
6. I can race with my kids.
7. I can ride an amusement park ride (and have).
8. I have added years to my life expectancy and will now be aroud for my family!
9. I can get out of my car easily.
10. I can sit in any chair at my office
11. I can buy clothes at LL Bean and my wife got my Bean Barn Jacket that I've always wanted and it fits!!
12. I am able to do yard work without having to rest every 10 minutes.
13. I am enjoying life again.
14. I feel like I can participate and do anything I want to now and am no longer held back by my weight.
...
Here are things that I do and have done to help contribute to my success over the past year:
1. I mindfully eat all the time.
2. I exercise regularly.
3. I take my vitamins.
4. I attend at least one support group per month.
5. I regularly participate in other forums.
6. I start eating the 3-4 oz of protein at my meal and then work on my veggies.
7. I take in at least 60-80 grams of protein per day.
8. I drink at least 64 ozs of non caffeinated fluids per day.
9. I weight in only once per week on Sundays.
Well, here's to an even better 2012 and there is no stopping me now. I am going to run at least 1 5K this Spring and who knows where that will lead me from there. The Sky is the Limit!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Been a while since I've checked in. December was a bad month for me as I have not been completely on the wagon. Below is my blog post from this morning pledging to get back on track.
---
Another year has come and gone, and what a year it has been. almost 6 months ago I decided to have RNY gastric bypass surgery. On that day in July I weighed 394 pounds. As of today, Januray 1, 2012 I weigh 277 pounds. I feel much better and healthier today. But I know I can do better.
I have been bad. I have slipped off of the diet I am supposed to be following. I have eaten some bad stuff over the past month and unfortunately my body has been okay with it for the most part. I do not suffer from dumping syndrome, a feeling of sickness and discomfort from eating too much sugar or fat, which some people who've had RNY do. This is not good because I will need to be more diligent in my battle against my demons (sugary carbs).
I also have been very "lazy" when it comes to exercise. I use the excuses that I don't have time because of my long commute to and from work or that it is too dark or cold to get out and walk or jog by the time I get home. I need to find time and ways to get more exercise in.
I did lose 16 pounds this past month, but in the back of my head I know it could have been more had I eaten and exercised better. I have been given an awesome tool, but I need to use it better to avoid slipping further into my old habits. I have never been one for making New Years resolutions, but I need to this year. I need to eat better and do some sort of exercise everyday. I am setting a mini goal to be down to 257 by the end of January, that would be a 20 pound loss for the month. I know I can do it, but it will take some hard work and dedication.
Happy New Year everyone. Wish me luck on getting back on track.

What a wonderful year 2011 was to me! I see alot of my friends and family making statements like "Glad 2011 is over" and "Hope 2012 is better than 2011 because 2011 was a bad year for me"... Well, not in my case. I do hope that 2012 is better to me than 2011, because that is going to make for one awesome year. Here are some highlights/key moments of the last year:
- Started the year 2011 weighing 429 lbs... Ended it weighing 289!
- Lost 49 lbs pre-op and already felt a huge difference by the time I had surgery on August 30th.
- Learned a hell of a lot about how to change my life for the better
- Went on my WLS journey with my wife, who had VSG surgery 22 days after me.
- Had the priviledge of seeing my wife (and her seeing me) make the most positive changes in ourselves that either of us have ever made.
- I now am able to do some things I've not done for a long time (or ever):
> Can fit in any seatbelt in any car without a problem
> Get to workout at the gym without constant pain and failure to complete my goals
> Dropped a whole persons worth of weight (139 lbs)
> Dropped 5 pant sizes and am now paying half as much for clothes because I can buy them off the rack at regular stores in stead of Big and Tall stores.
> Dropped 2 shirt sizes from 4x to 2x
> Get compliments daily on my weightloss from family, friends, and coworkers that helps keep me motivated.
> Have made some new friends on OH that have really helped me along the way
> Have some serious new found energy that allows me to do so much more than I could at my highest weight.
> Step on the scale and see a 2 in front of the other numbers now, not a 4.
> Have met my mini goals of getting below 400 lbs before surgery, get below 350 within 3 months of surgery (beat that by a month and a half), and get below 300 before 2012 (beat that by almost 2 weeks)
And the list goes on and on. Here is to 2012. May it be as good to me as 2011 was, and may it treat you as well as it does me (or better). I have been so blessed this year, and I thank God every day for my new found health and life. May you find that same blessing in the new year, my friends!
Happy New Year!!!!
