RNY and Drinking Alcohol

Amen to that!!  I can't drink hard stuff.  Tried a shot of Tequila during a moment of weakness while tailgating at the Patriots/Jets game and it hit like a lead balloon.  Won't be doing that again any time soon!

As for an occasional craft beer here and there, I've had no problems at all and don't really feel the crazy effects that people describe about getting drunk quicker, losing a buzz, etc...  My guess is that those people never drank before surgery and would have had the same effects with or without surgery...     I remember my first beer...

With that being said, I am not going to go start binge drinking like in my college days and always make having a drink the exception instead of the rule.  I now prefer a nice cup of coffee to a drink in most cases.  There are still a ton of empty calories in alcohol that don't fit into my new lifestyle of eating well and exercising!!  If you are out and about during the holiday season I would warn that you don't experiment for the first time while at a party but do so in the privacy of your home because we are all different and your experiences may not be the same as mine!!

Just an update on the alcohol and holiday issue.

Last week was the Christmas party for my previous project. Well over 1,000 people in attendance and it resulted in 5 DUI arrests on the way home. Not a great way to celebrate.

The 3 of us that had RNY didn't drink but we all seemed to have a great time. My choice not to drink was due to the fact I was driving.

Last night was the Christmas party for my current project. I wasn't driving and had a single glass of wine. No problems with the pouch. But, I'm finding that drinking has minimal interest for me because I'm much more concious of empty calories and it just doesn't really fit within my current exercise program.

RNY has really  affected me in a very positive way both physically and mentally.

High Weight = 310     Surgery Weight = 300   Dr's Goal = 200   My Goal = 190

I'm always weird in the way I react. Japan, being a drinking country, makes it hard not to imbibe sometimes, though I've only recently started.

Kind of surprised that although I got intoxicated pretty easily the first times and the first drink still tends to hit me a little more than before, I think I could easily get to where a bottle of wine wouldn't do much to me. which is where I was before surgery.

Not sure if I'm still making the enzymes that digest alchohol or if taking in any large quantity of anything just causes me to malabsorb. Though the tolerance does seem progressive. Now in a country where people drink like fish, people harp over how I don't get drunk.

Not sure how it would be if I went to something stronger like Boubon?
